Dow falls more 1% in afternoon trade as 10-year Treasury on the verge of new 52-week low

U.S. stocks deepened their losses Monday afternoon as government bond yields plumbed fresh lows, highlighting growing worries about geopolitical risks that have buffeted Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 319 points, or 1.2%, at 25,968, near its intraday low at 25,963, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.1% to 2,886, and the Nasdaq Composite Index retreated 1% to 7,880. The declines come as the 10-year Treasury note slipped to a near 52-week low at around 1.65%. Bond prices rise as yields fall. Investors have been wrestling with unresolved tensions between the U.S. and China over tariffs, with a looming Sept. 1 deadline before import duties on Chinese goods are raised, weighing on market sentiment. On top of that, investors were reacting to rising tensions in Hong Kong as thousands of protesters rushed into Hong Kong International Airport, prompting the airport to cancel all outbound flights. The protests has added to the litany of factors that have bruised investor confidence in recent weeks.
