Coffee Inflation Soars

It's only getting worse.

Arabica coffee futures are trading at new highs, pushing past a record set in April 1977.

Coffee Prices Break 47-Year Old Record

The higher prices are said to be mostly a product of financial speculation. Coffee beans are not in harvesting season yet so investors can't know the realities surrounding their concerns about the crops.

Looking at the coffee chart going back to the early 80's, the range is wide but the price fluctuations have been fairly consistent over the years - between 0.50 and 3.00. Why is it $6 for a cup of coffee today and it was about a quarter in the 80's?

I pay $3.25 for a tea bag and a pot of hot water at Bob Evens. Twice and I can buy a box of 100 at the grocery store.

Guess it's time for me to go back to cigarettes until it comes back down?

Don't mess with the coffee! But Brazilian? Meh.

Fortunately, the best coffee beans come from Africa and Central America. :coffee:

So- I remember as a kid- coffee came in ONE POUND (small) and (big was what, 3 pounds? Or five pounds?).

A small can was one pound. What was the big can then? In the 1960’s?

33.9oz was the size we typically bought.

Ok- I’m seeing on line that coffee came in one pound, or 2.5 pound, or three pound cans.

So what used to be a three pound can, has shrunk over the years from 48 ounces, down now to 40 ounces (Folgers), or to just 35.7 ounces (Maxwell House) ounces.

It’s the corporations.

Bigger price, less product.

I blame them..
