There is currently a big solar flare going on. Some folks believe solar flares affect the market.

I've seen people sugget that solar flares send the market in both directions.

We actually have been going through an extended period of low solar flare activity. I think that solar flares do affect people since flares affect our satellites and thus cause some communication blips. I thinks this makes our mood a little more on edge, even if just subconsciously.

So, I'll make a prediction. Market down today but will take back off when the solar flare subsides. But I'm not going to move my money around (I would if we had unlimted trades).

Thoughts, opinions, links of interest???

We are like little bugs crawling on a huge surface. We think because we have a better understanding of the surface and because all we have known over the centuries has been consistent - that we have it all figured out and that everything will continue as it always has.

Under the surface is the evidence of activity beyond our control and with this Super Mega Volcanoes can change the global environment and adversely affect all life. Solar Flares from the sun could easily destroy all satelites and essentially disrupt all means of electronic communications. That means the Markets, Banks, Hospitals, and everything grind to a halt and we simply deal with whatever happens. The center of our Milky Way has a power beyond all the stars and planets and everything contained within our galaxy. In 2012 we will have the honor of witnessing its power as never before.

I'd say in comparison to the Universe and the life it contains that the Markets are meaningless. When everything changes unexpectantly on a magnitude that brings all the bugs crawling on the surface on a totally even level and money itself no longer has any worth - then who knows what will happen?

I know I've never been happier - more content - and more full of promise and hope for the future. ;):)

That's pretty cool! That's what one of my delightful receptionist's says...

...except she doesn't know me as SG.

Only the priviledged few on this site know me for who I really am.

Ahhhh -- what you're describing is ultimately what I hope it's like someday when we can see the stars expand and explode and be right in midst of everything. Ahhhhhhh yes .... my hope and dream.

Well it's off to lunch.

Hey- the center of our Milky Way is good, but I didn't think it was THAT good...

Solar flares in the news again-

Power companies prepare as solar storms set to hit Earth

(Reuters) - Three large explosions from the Sun over the past few days have prompted U.S. government scientists to caution users of satellite, telecommunications and electric equipment to prepare for possible disruptions over the next few days.

"The magnetic storm that is soon to develop probably will be in the moderate to strong level," said Joseph Kunches, a space weather scientist at the Space Weather Prediction Center, a division of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

He said solar storms this week could affect communications and global positioning system (GPS) satellites and might even produce an aurora visible as far south as Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Utility companies have known that 2011-2012 was supposed to significant big solar flare activity for years. I heard about it back in 2008 doing an internship. Senior engineers were already having meetings about it to discuss impacts on transmission systems and nuke plants.

The theory is that solar flare activity agitates folks. People who have interupted internet/phone/TV get cranky. Cranky-agitated folks are more pessimistic folks. Therefore, as the theory goes, solar flare activity has a negative affect on the market.

Throw that out the window.... S&P downgrade will be much mor on peoples minds than a jittery satellite dish signal. I think the markets go down Monday because of the uncertainty of the S&P downgrade, not because of solar flares. I would not be surprised for some big boys to start buying after a morning downturn and try to squeeze some shorts. That is not a game I want to play in. I'll stay on the sidelines tommorrow.

Well, if the end is near, I guess I'd better start preparing for Plan A or B.

Plan A: Learn to like fish. Swim, relax with a Mai Tai and leave the world to fall apart; or

Plan B: move back to the mainland, either Idaho or Montana, live in the middle of farmers and surround myself with a lot of rednecks with guns.
