Automatic Spreadsheet Updates

Hey everyone!

I'm new to this forum group, but I have done a bit of reading in on your discussions in the past.

I was wondering if anyone might have an existing spreadsheet that automatically updates the daily share prices of each of the TSP funds? This is my major roadblock from being able to keep track of my TSP activity on my own, and I was just curious if anyone had already solved this problem.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks!

I have a spreadsheet that I have improved upon (simple version given to me by a friend). You have to manually input the daily price/share and your shares/fund if you do an IFT. Some members are using it. It does automatically show your daily/monthly/yearly progress. I am more than glad to share.

No guarantees this will work for you, but . . . I use the attached [TSP weekly update.xls] at least once a week and sometimes more frequently. It can pull TSP fund price from the the TSP website automatically, but you will likely have to enable linking and enable macros--always a risk. I provide this spreadsheet to address the concept of linking/automatic updates.

Originally developed as a macro-enabled Excel 2010 spreadsheet, I converted it back to Excel 97-2003 "compatability" . . . so all the cautions that go along with anything that is converted backwards and is macro-enabled go along with it. Just like lots of other free things, I cannot accept responsibility for data or other problems and I offer no support.

Even though it indicates it is compatible with earlier versions of Excel, it is what it is, and I don't have any plans to improve it. If you are good with spreadsheets, feel free to make improvements. [Although I would appreciate feedback. Just send a PM.]

ANOTHER WARNING: When TSP.gov changes funds (like adding L2050) or otherwise changes their TSP prices website (like for holidays), the spreadsheet will update with erroneous or nonsense info. If you are not comfortable with modifying the spreadsheet to accommodate this, you should not rely on this spreadsheet.

Because I like to "cut and paste" into another file that I import into Quicken, I've used pseudoticker symbols that should be understandable. If not, look at http://www.tsptalk.com/1212/shareprices.html [I haven't bothered with adding L2050 on the left side, although it pulls the most recent few weeks of data into the sheet.]

Hope you find this helpful.

I'm probably the last person who should have linking and macros enabled but I DO like to live dangerously. :D

Thank you so much for the spreadsheet. :)

Monty, thanks for sharing that spreadsheet! I've looked it over briefly but have no idea how it manages to automatically update the shares prices. Where did you find this?

Everyone else, thanks for your input. This is an issue I am very interested in solving as it would make it much easier to follow TSP-related investment strategies. Please share this thread with others that might be interested in working on this issue.

Thanks!

In Excel 2010, link to
https://www.tsp.gov/investmentfunds/shareprice/sharePriceHistory.shtml
which starts at approximately top center of the spreadsheet. [What you see in the spreadsheet is just the unformatted data from that website.]

Set your data refresh to the opening of the spreadsheet to get new data each time.

Everything else around the linked data is just spreadsheet "trimmings and gravy." [transposed data and graph]

As I mentioned in PM, the macros are probably hidden in the background (some more Microsoft magic) but I've not investigated.

Enjoy
