Hi All,

I have been lurking for quite awhile and decided to finally join up!

I am a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy and have been enlisted for 19 years, 9 months. I am nearing retirement eligibility, but not sure when I might pull the plug. I am up for E-8 for the 5th time next month, and I am leaning towards retiring if I don't make it this time.

I just recently returned from Afghanistan where I worked with the Army. Interesting to say the least! Nothing like rockets flying over your head while you are getting ready to hit your rack or convoying in and around Kabul. Adrenline UP!!!!

I have xxK in my TSP at the moment and have been putting money in since the military was eligible. I am trying to max out my deposits this year again in case I retire.

I want to get a Government Job when I retire. I have an Associates Degree in Management and (6) hours away from my Bachelors in Operations Management. I work in Logistics/Supply in the Navy.

My dad retired as a GS-15 working for GSA. My grandfather retired from the USPS after 31 years as a letter carrier. My uncle retired after 37 years as a Postmaster in the USPS. So hopefully, I can follow.

ANY TIPS ON HOW TO GET A GOVERNMENT JOB WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!!

Welcome to the Board EELindy, Getting a Govt Job is always hard. All I can tell you is to apply, and I think you get special consideration for 6 Months after your separation, used to but not sure now. One way to look into it is to go to http://www.usajobs.gov/, it is the official access to available jobs with the US Govt. I surly can't help you very much, the last time I applied was in 1974!:laugh:

Thank you so much for your dedication and service defending us. This is the site as mention in another post that you can use to apply for a government job. Everyone that is not currently employed by the government must use this site. Here it is www.usajobs.opm.gov Now this is the site that those of us that are already employed by the government must use to apply for a job within the government. You can look through and check out the job descriptions and see if there are ones you might have and interest in. Then you can see if you need to add anything to your creditials or education that may help you. Here is that site https.//chart.donhr.navy.mil if that doesn't work try https.//chart.donhr.navy.mil/index.asp If a security warning comes up just click continue. For some reason XP doesn't recognize the site but it could be intentional on the governments part not sure. Hope this will be of some help to you. USAJOBS is a good place to look-

In fact, you can find a great deal of information about veterans preferance here:
http://opm.gov/veterans/

Most veterans with active duty time during war time can get vet preference status, and disabled vets get higher status than that. It doesn't mean you will get the job, but it does mean that you should be looked at over someone who isn't vet preference.

Start looking at the jobs posted, and see what kind of thing you would like to do and be good at. If you see something that looks interesting, track down someone who is doing a similar job now, and ask them lots of questions about their job, and how THEY got it.

Prepare yourself in advance of the posted openings by putting together your resume, and some of the commonly used forms, so that when an opening comes up that you really want to apply for, you have most of the information you are going to need all in one place.

USAJOBS is not the ONLY place to look- some agencies post their own openings- but nearly all of them use the web now for openings.

EELindy, As a Navy civil servent for the 32 years I have watched allot of former service people obtain federal jobs. My first input would be to look at Navy bases close to where you want to be located. There always seems to be some advice from the local CPO club membership on what works at that particular installation. If you can be patient, there can be allot of opportunities if you are willing to get your foot in the door to get started. The job that you want my only be one to two jumps once you get inside the door. Good luck, Steve
