BOSTON (MarketWatch) - It was Citigroup Inc.'s turn on Wednesday to face pressure as investors raised questions about the financial giant's exposure to off-balance-sheet "conduits" that issue commercial paper which have caused problems at global rivals.
Recently, conduits and structured investment vehicles, or SIVs, that issue asset-backed short-term debt have come under pressure. The commercial paper, which is used to meet funding needs, is backed by various types of investments such as credit cards, auto loans and, most importantly, mortgages.
Banks don't provide much information on the assets held by the third-party conduits, which is fueling uncertainty and investors' fears over potential losses from the vehicles. Banks often administer the conduits and collect fees from managing the assets.
