I am a pessimist about what the TSP board will do. They have made up their minds. I realy dont expect us to change them. Still need to try tho.

yes, we have to do our part. We have to give it our best shot. It is pretty bad, we they can control our capital like this. Just think of all the profits that will left on the table if this goes through.

I don't mean this to downplay anyone on this MB - but we are simply the tail trying to wag the dog. Compared to the Millions who buy and hold indefinately; we represent a very insignificant number. Money always rules and it always will; had I been in charge everyone would have been charged a fee for any trade they made. There is no way my company would have taken a 200M loss for free trades.

I know I can make hundreds of thousands over the next 15 years no matter what restrictions I'm up against. The first law of finance is that it takes money to make money. All new members need to realize that it takes time in grade to accumulate shares - that's the primary restriction they face and the only way to overcome that is to stay employed - the silver thread. If you max out for 30 years you'll achieve a base that will allow you to succeed with minimal IFTs. Learn before you churn - I'm ready to rock with high octane.

FRTIB spent millions on a computer system to enable daily IFT's. Then they sued the company for non-performance - and settled. All at a huge cost to TSP shareholders. Now they are going to spend more millions to implement software "restrictions" to undo the system that they spent millions to put in place. All of this, and the cost of L Funds daily rebalancing, is costing shareholders a heck of a lot more than the active traders.

You are totally right - and I fully agree with you - but this is the way of life and it's always the small guys (the general public) who pay the cost. It is not my company - nor do I control the health care system or many other sectors that place an incredible burden on the general population. It is indeed very unfortunate that the system many of us depend on for a comfortable retirement is placing restraints that will greatly limit our potiential returns. On the bright side - while others are losing their retirement system altogether - the Federal employees will always have the TSP and many other benefits to boot.

True to a certain extent. However, if we can't manage our funds as we see fit, then it makes more sense to put in only the matching funds, and put the extra that would have "maxed out" in an account that CAN be managed in response to a volatile market for maximum return.

Adding to that, in my opinion at least, if you cannot afford to both max out your TSP and fund a Roth IRA to the max, then I would contribute the first 5% to TSP to get the matching funds, then fund a Roth to the max if possible, and then add any additional available funds back into the TSP. Given the level of future debt our country is facing, taxes can't go any way but up and I would take advantage of relatively low tax rates now via a Roth IRA to shield future earnings from the taxman. Just my opinion.

If your spouse has a 401K, you could consider shifting funds beyond the 5% to that by having them increase their contributions and you covering more bills.

Don't be surprised if at some point in the near future you are offered the option of taking a defined contribution plan in place of the annuity program. It's really the way to go if you want to manage your own retirement money. My wife has one through the Florida Retirement System and has already made several extra hundreds of thousands of dollars since switching in 2002. The TSP is set up to handle this kind of a program and the politicians say it is cost effective for them - the employee is responsible for their own future just like in a 401K plan. I'd take one in a heartbeat.

12%, I'm at loss for words how to thank you for the post below at 11:24 this am - I decided to hold on, in large part, because of this post. I'd been pouring over price charts, p&f charts, patterning, wondering what's going on, w/ the bizzare events of the last 36 hrs.
Hope we will return now to more normal seasonal conditions tomorrow (& the tantrum is now ended). I feel too, as you added later, the "NASDAQ and Small-caps way oversold. S FUND for me for the rest of the month."

Many factors influence my decisions, including perspective by Griff, James's lessons w/ p&f charts, etc., but your post below I needed hear to "help me over the top." Whatever tomorrow brings, I wanted you to know I'm very appreciative!
