< 1 pct. IFT Option

Re: <1%IFT Option

Please remember, this Tracking of the <1%IFT will only be kept while I'm
at <1%IFT levels. Should I increase my risk (out of those levels) or bail
totaly to the (G) Fund, I will no longer be tracking my results. I invite
everyone to make up a Spreadsheet, should you wish to track your own
results while I'm out of my <1%IFT Levels. Those Levels tend to be
5% or Less. I'll post when I go into my <1%IFT mode. ;)

Well golly I can't believe you criminals are still getting away with these [FONT=&quot]shenanigans! I hope you realize you're circumventing the IFT's wheels of justice and costing all of us buy & holders enough money to buy a happy meal :cheesy:

Hey Mr. Long guess what?

You still haven't saved anyone any money, and you still suck...

Re: <1%IFT Option

Depending on todays market, I have plans on jacking up my (S) and (I) Funds
through utilizing my Future Allocation (comes in on Tuesday for me) ability.
I'll be allocating 50% in each of the two funds and drive my percentages
over their next whole percent level. ;)

Several key factors are playing here concerning the (I) Fund. EAFE INDEX
is up only +1.98% and the EFA is up +3.07% currently. This is a pretty big
difference between the two. My estimate of increase within the (I) Fund
is based on the deficit and my guess that they will payback some of it
today.

If this was 11:40am, I'd be debating over leaving my funds alone for
today and gaining the ability to raise them (C,S,I) to 3% for Wednesday.
OR
Making a <1%IFT today 89-5-2-2-2 which would pull my profits out of
the stock funds and absorb a minor loss in the bond fund. This wouldn't
be seen until tomorrow morning, but executed today before noon.

Re: <1%IFT Option

I added shares to the C-Fund from payday(100% C) contributions at the close on Wednesday. On Thursday, using your 1% method, I added over twice the shares, I accumulated from payroll contributions. I went from 10.4% C to 11% C and this was important, because I had used my 2 IFTS for the month.
The method works well, for adding shares on big down days.

Re: <1%IFT Option

Thanks for the breakdown on the <1% option, SB. I have learned something new today.

See what happens when you take a nap, the whole world goes into the
positive YTD, well, not everyone and certainly not me. I want to cry like
I'm peeling onions for not being in at a higher level. AND, I want to scream
for not having the ability based on our limits. But if I had to grasp onto
something positive, your post makes the pain much easier to take. I'm
glad I can help. :)

It also works well by waiting. Today, I waited until tomorrow to make
a move. What this did was push me over the next whole percentage.
You'll see this in my breakdown example (my estimate) of what I expect
to see come the TSP update at 7:30pm est.

Tuesday - March 24, 2009 Combined Loss/Gain: +0.38% / +0.02%
(g)88.74%------>(g).........%----> 000.0000 (this will go down if:)

(.i)02.05%------>(.i).........%----> 000.0000 (this goes up to 3%)

I can added more dollars at risk by buying more shares at a higher
price and bumping up my percentages to the next percentile.

Re: <1%IFT Option

Ok, today is my last day to adjust my Future Contribution Allocations
before the money goes into the account. I was planning on doing a
<1%IFT and pump up the stock funds to 3%. However, the benefit
I get by allocating new money into the stock funds will be neagated
(spelling?) by doing a <1%IFT. The Fund Managers will add the new
money into the balance, then rebalance it to the Percentages that
I requested through my <1%IFT request. Should this be a down day,
the benefit of spreading my future allocation into all of the three risk
funds results in buying more shares cheaper. But this close to the
end of the month is leaning me towards a lowering of current and
future dollars at risk. I'll keep you informed. Any coments are more
then welcome !

SB, Great questioin. I wish I had more time to run this through my test program. I may do it over the next couple of days just to answer the question anyway. The future allocation is the money coming out of your paycheck twice a month? PM me with your %'s and over the next couple of days I will try to check it out. It will not help you now but may help in future need.

I'll do that Nasa for future reference. But I've decided to;
"Go on, take the money and run". The month was a great
success, even though I bailed to my <1%IFT levels way
too soon. Hind sight is 20/20. But I killed the (G) Fund to
this point by gaining more then 12 weeks of (G) Fund
returns. If this rally continues, I won't feel bad at all. We
have six trading days left and I'll be content to seek a
full investment entry point come April. ! ;)

Re: <1%IFT Option

In my never ending battle with being OCD, I have the need to once again
act like "Monk" (TV reference) and repeat something that I believe bears one
more mention.

Goals are important. My goal was to beat the (G) Fund during the
remainder of the March (when I decided to bail to the G Fund). If
I did this during a downturn, I would have lost money and wished
I just went to safety. Some retirees might find this method quite
interesting as they may not want to be exposed to huge risk and
hate what the (G) has to offer in the way of gains. But still, they
could loss money while trying to beat the Bear. What I'm trying to
say is; depending on your goals and time left to accomplish them,
it might be more beneficial to simply go to the (G). Unless you plan
on keeping your <1%IFT Levels for a long time (over a month), its
extremely important to keep this post in mind. ;)

In conclusion, I'm not fooling myself or anyone else about what
could have been, if I only stayed were I was at on March 10th or
11th, 2009. I could have been Even or Up YTD by about 2%. The
decision I made (to drop down to <1%IFT levels) was the wrong
decision for all the right reasons. But hey, I'm sure the future
holds a right decision for all the wrong reasons too.

Now lets look at the accomplishments made through my decision.

First, I got great satisfaction out of continuing over 22 IFT's YTD
when those in power said I can't. Even if small, I took back a little
portion of control over my own money, that should have never
been taken away. But this is about the money and not about the
"feel good" emotions described above.

Second, I took the (G) Fund's +0.1023% that was made between
3/12/09 and 3/24/09 and turned it into +0.5943% gain while at
minimal risk. That's an additional +0.492% A$$ kicking of the (G)
Fund. Now, that will mean a different dollar amounts for different
account balances, but percentages don't lie. Even if you had only
$8000 in the TSP, it still makes for a great alternative or option.

Third, members had the option, who came into a Rally at the right
time and exposed themselves to much greater risk, found some of
this information useful. I know of at least one member who used this
method to Jack Up his percentages on the way up.

EXAMPLE: (ie...53.01%-->54.0%-->54.01%-->55.0%)

Please remember, its easy to get lost in freedom. The example above
is not designed to beat the (G) Fund, but to beat the market for
substantial gains. In a Bull Market (unconfirmed yet) this little gem
has more room for success when used for such purposes. In a Bear
Market, your risk of greater loses is too real to ignore.

I hope you enjoyed this highly viewed thread, as much as I have.
I'm ready to park this car into the (G)arage until the next time I
decide to use my <1%IFT Option. Until such time, I welcome any
questions one may have,,,,or,,,, opinions one may want to share.

Re: <1%IFT Option

Some Basic Changes that occurs when doing a <1%IFT when the market
finishes differently then expected;

It's 11:30am (est.) and your pressed to make a decision concerning a
decision to make a <1%IFT. You made one the day before and your %
levels are 97-0-1-1-1. But today, you see the market being negative
all morning and have a strong feeling that it will close negative too.
Tomorrow, a major Economic Report or Earnings Report is due to come
out at 10am and you feel it will have a positive effect on the market.

So, What do you do ? Well, that's up to you, but here are your options;

a) Leave your balance alone and accept the outcome.
b) Do a <1%IFT again with the same exact percentages.
c) Do a <1%IFT and reduce your risk in any/all your funds.
d) Totaly bail out of the Market and go to safety at 100%

My decision might have been (b) because I would be purchasing more
shares cheaper as a result of a negative day today. I'd still have my
original 97-0-1-1-1 percentages at work for the impending reports that
were due out tomorrow.

But what happens when your WRONG about today and a late afternoon
rally swings the Market into a positive close? I'll be back to answer this
and other questions soon!;)
