Winning Strategies - Lessons from Top TSP Talk AutoTracker Performers in November

November was a strong month for S-fund investors, with the fund gaining an impressive 11.97%, nearly matching the best yearly return of 2022. However, the path to this gain wasn’t smooth. The fund experienced a notable 3.1% drop between November 12th and 15th. The top four November performers on the TSP Talk AutoTracker capitalized on this volatility, moving out of stocks (primarily S-fund) early in the month and shifting into safer options like the G or F-fund. They then repurchased stocks after prices fell, enabling them to outperform the S-fund’s already stellar return. This highlights the value of staying flexible and strategically responding to market trends in building an effective TSP investment strategy.

November saw ten TSP Talk AutoTracker members outperform the S-fund, with MacDaddy leading the pack at an impressive 15.58%. This standout performance came from well-timed interfund transfers (IFTs) in mid-November, which I reviewed in detail last week.

Holding the S-fund throughout November was a strong strategy, with 109 non-premium members earning the 11th best return at 11.97%. In contrast, the C-fund returned 5.87% for the month, less than half the S-fund’s gain. AutoTracker members holding 100% C-fund through November tied for the 331st best return for the month. While the C-fund has been 2024’s top-performing TSP fund at 28.03%, the S-fund is closing in with a 25.80% return year-to-date.

Outperforming the C-fund for the year has been a challenge for most investors, but November shifted the dynamic. On November 7th, only six members had a higher 2024 return than the C-fund. By the end of the month, that number grew to 22, with the S-fund playing a pivotal role in boosting their annual performance. These top investors’ average fund allocation reflects this strategy:

G-Fund: 18.2%, F-fund: 2.3%, C-fund: 23.4%, S-fund: 54.3%, I-fund: 1.8%
