Whats in your pocket?

Im finally looking to upgrade from my flip phone. I tend to have some free time @ work, but no access to a pc. A smart phone would allow making IFT deadlines & accessing my personal account.
I've got my eye on 2 different phones: A Windows phone, and a Droid.
I went yesterday to tMobile to get a feel for my options. Theres pro's & con's to both, and I just wanted to try to get some opinions from anyone here who has experience with one or another. From what I can tell:

Windows phone- (HTC-7)

- Pro- Very easy to use. Fast. Smooth.

- Con- $100 more than droid. Very limited Apps. (claims of more to come) New to the cell market. Supposedly buggy (claims of updates coming).

Droid- (Motorola Defy)

- Pro- $100 cheaper than windows phone. May qualify for buy 1, get 1 free. Lots of available apps, including my broker account. Phone hardware itself is rugged & waterproof.

- Con- Complicated & bloated with unnessesary apps. Slower and not as smooth as windows phone.

I dont need 3/4 of the apps available for either phone. But the app for my broker account is a bonus, as I dont have to zoom & scroll on a webpage to sign-in or navigate.
I have GPS in my car, I dont use facebook regularly, etc. I just want to access TSP, this forum, and my broker account.
The buy one get one free on the droid is cool but its 99% overkill for my wife.

I havent considered blackberry's, and dont know why I would honestly.

At one time I was using a windows mobile 6 and it wouldn't work with the previous tsp.gov website. As for now, my Evo Android rocks and I'll never go back to a windows phone again.

I had an HTC Pro2 and absolutely loved it. The sliding keyboard was great. YOu get stock market quotes without having to download any app. I use to do stock trades on the golf course with it. Only bad thing was I kept bumping the outside buttons and would accidentally call people or some Youtube video would come on. I really like the spreadsheets on it too and being able to view and edit documents. A lot of phones you can only view. Nice back up in case something happens to your computer connection.

I have a Blackberry Style now, which is a flip phone. I like the flip part, but that's about it. The camera is nice too. The keys are just way too small for me. I do a lot of texting with the girlfriend. I've downloaded a couple apps trying to get stock market quotes, but they don't work right and definitely don't stream like they are suppose to. I might being doing something wrong, I don't know. GPS on it seems to work well.

I'd like to check out one of the Samsung phones, but you can only view spreadsheets with them apparently..................

Have you heard that Verizon may be announcing this week, that it is bringing the iPhone into its network?

I am a fan of Verizon's network and this is something I may look into.

If you go with Blackberry -cool. I have been trading their stock (RIMM) and I'd appreciate the earnings boost. :)

Sprint samsung android 'Moment'.
New android 4G EVO and Epic look good. $10 more a month for 4G capability. New Verizon Droids have HDMI to plug into most flatscreen TVs. new Samsung android phones can wirelessly stream HD video to Samsung TVs equipped with proprietary wireless. Androids can edit excel spreadsheets through free and more robust paid apps.
New androids have Flash video

I have Verizon and the Motorola Droid. I am not the best with technology, so just dicovered tethering. I tried a couple of the apps, but found the free app, PDA Net, to work best for me. (No financial interest in any of these companies). I now have a network connection for the laptop whenever my phone has service.

I have the AT&T Samsung Captivate. I got it free on black friday. I recently rooted it and installed a different ROM called Cognition. AT&T wanted $10 a month to use their navigation app along with the GPS. F that. There was a bunch of other AT&T bloatware that I wanted to get rid of. So far so good. :D

You can find more information on the Motorola Defy here.

On that same site I found the HTC 7 Mozart and HTC HD7

I once thought apple made the best phones, now I don't. Anyone considering an apple, I'll tell you upfront you will pay for most of your apps, while I'll get most of mine for free on my android.

I just bought the Droid X and absolutely love it. Love the GPS/Navigation, voice texting and camera is great w/easy upload to facebook. I especially like being able to take a pictures of check and depositing on the spot, thus allowing the funds to be automatically available. Yes, some of it is overkill and I do not need a lot of the apps, but love the phone. I am still learning all of it functions and think that it was well worth the buy. The only downside is short battery life. If you have one the first app you want to get is the Advanced Task Killer Free. This allows you to shut everything down so you do not have anything running in the back ground, thus using your battery life, after you are done using it.

Nate, you can't go wrong with an iPhone or any Android phone running 2.2 or better. I have my eyes set on the dual core "Atrix" that Motorola showed off at the CES. http://ces.cnet.com/8301-32254_1-20027501-283.html

One thing you should consider before buying a phone is the battery life. I love the DroidX and the HTC EVO, but the 5 inch touch screen is a battery hog! I like to go a full day without charging. Hope this helps. :)

ATK helps preserves battery, true. Bloatware apps that come on the phone will however just reload themselves.

You need root to kill the bloatware and then a SP like DroidX will really fly.
Until the next "upgrade" anyway.. :notrust:

Hey Fabulous1, can you explain rooting for us? Not familiar with it. How does it affect a phone? Can the casual do something like this?

What Is Rooting?

First, for the newbies, let me clarify what rooting is. Getting root or rooting your phone is the process of modifying the operating system on your device to grant you complete control over it.

This means you can overcome limitations that the carriers and manufacturers put on your phone, extend system functionality, and even upgrade it to a custom flavor of Android.

The name root comes from the Linux operating system world, where the most privileged user on the system (otherwise known as Administrator on Windows) is called root.

If hate isn't too strong a word, then I'll say I hate apple for pulling this 1 phone carrier bussiness, leaving the others out to dry. For years I wanted an apple, but i couldn't get one because I am a loyal Sprint customer. Oh well, too late for you Mr. Apple, I now have a 4G Sprint Evo, and it makes your Iphone look like something I need to wipe off the bottom of my shoe.

Apple, you are dead to me, you had your chance and you blew it...

Quick thoughts on iPhone4: ATT sucks, but the iPhone4 is awesome, previous models are way too slow with the updated iOS. The phone is the worst part about it, the browser and speed are great. But, if you have a lot of family and friends w/ iPhones, you can do free video calling via facetime and video Skype... on the plane too since it's not a "phone call". Remote desktop and log me in work well, and my phone is an extension of the home PC.

Origionally I was looking to get an used up, scratched up Iphone 3G off ebay for +/- $100. Tmobile doesnt offer the Iphone, but Ive got a friend that can jailbreak it. Then, I contacted tMobile & found out im eligable for an upgrade. Doesnt make sense to me to go with used when I can get new.
After looking on their website, I liked the Motorola droid. But upon going into the store, the windows phone just operated so much smoother..the droid was laggy. I read the forums on tmobile, and the forums posted by KevinD. Both were informative, but the end conclusion is like Chevy's & Ford's. Some hate one, others love it. Both will do what I want, so its just left to the hardware in the end I guess.
Option 1 - The motorola is waterproof , and has the gorilla glass which is a bonus....plus if I get in on the buy 1, get 1....wife gets a free phone. The battery has complaints.
Option 2 - The HTC is smooth like silk, but as fragile as the iphone im sure. Without a case, it is destined to have broken glass soon enough. I maybe dropped my flip 5 times in 2 years. The battery has alot of complaints.
I charge my phone nightly, so battery shouldnt be a huge issue. Theres always the charger option, and I get 1-1/2 hour a day to sit in my car & listen to Rush Limbaugh. I would be leaning towards the windows phone, but the HTC also has other gripes like speakers having low volume.
With the buy 1 get 1, and gorilla glass, I may be going with the cheaper Motorola. I guess it comes down to the better deal. it would also leave me some money leftover to try out that ING app & put money into stocks
If the windows phone had good hardware reviews, and the gorilla glass, I'd be sold hands down. There are newer phones coming out, but im not sure I want to wait 4 months for the perfect windows phone at Tmobile. I guess I may just do the droid & upgrade to windows when theyve figured out all the bugs & such.
