UPS expects 1.5 million returns for National Returns Day
United Parcel Service Inc. said it expects a record 1.5 million returns on Wednesday, which it calls National Returns Day. The returns come from purchases made in the days leading up to Black Friday when a lot of "self-gifting" happened thanks to promotions and discounts. Simplified policies are driving returns. UPS expects more than one million returns per day in December, and 1.3 million on Jan. 3, a second wave of returns. UPS data shows that 75% of consumers have shipped returns to a retailer, and 44% of shoppers say the top online return issue is paying for the shipping. UPS shares are down 1.6% in Wednesday trading and down 19.7% for 2018. The S&P 500 index is down 4.4% for the year to date.
