TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

Those sitting in stock funds this week added to their TSP value. The C, S, and I-fund all rose around 1.6% for the week. The I-fund did come out on top with a marginally higher return of 1.62%. Only six TSP Talk AutoTracker members had better returns for the week. The top three of those all did the same thing: They moved some or all of their S-fund holding to the G-fund on Wednesday while the market was peaking.

Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending May 17:

The best to do it was thewingreaper who wisely spent a May IFT moving from 100% S-fund to 100% G-fund on Wednesday. Thewingreaper kept the 0.6% the S-fund gave back over the rest of the week and held onto a gain of 2.2% over the five days.

ColonelFur and Beau435 made similar moves on Wednesday and both members ended the week with returns of over 2% for the week.

These members sold on Wednesday after the latest Consumer Price Index rose 3.4% on an annualized basis. This was marginally lower than the previous month’s reading but was enough of anything to send stock prices higher. The stock indices were up around 0.8% near the TSP trade deadline and all three TSP stock funds eventually ended the day with gains of over 1% (the C-fund had the best daily return of 1.2% for the day). Tom made us question why the market would get so excited over a report on smaller high inflation, it’s still high.

We saw thewingreaper moving to the G-fund ahead of the TSP trade deadline in the Wednesday Last Look Report. They were alone in their endeavor out of stocks at that time, ColonelFur and Beau435 made their moves to the G-fund after the report was published. The other ten members committed to IFTs by the time the report was sent were all increasing or maintaining stock exposure while stock rallied in the morning off the inflation data.

Thursday’s pullback was not devasting to stockholders. The S-fund had the worst of it with its 0.67% loss.

Thewingreaper and ColonelFur were not just the top performers of this week, but the two currently sit at the top for the best return for May with two weeks left in the month. Thewingreaper has a May return of 6.41%. ColonelFur has a may return of 6.23%. Both members currently sit in the G-fund with another IFT available to use in May. They are trailed by OnTarget (6.08%, 50% C + 50% S) and nightman (5.94%, 100% C), the only other members ahead of the S-fund (5.75%) for May.
