TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

April has not been the month to hold stocks so far. Any TSP investors holding 100% stocks is down at least 2.4% for the month, and any of them holding 100% S-fund have seen their retirement account drop 4.7% in these first two weeks.

This week’s losses were deeper than the previous week’s. Yet only two TSP Talk AutoTracker members outperformed the G-fund last week. This week seven TSP Talk AutoTracker members pulled modest gains out of a sour week, and they all made the same move on the same day.

The seven TSP Talk AutoTracker members who outperformed all of the TSP funds all held some combination of stocks coming into the week and moved to 100% G-fund on Tuesday. All three TSP stock funds held a gain through the first two days of the week. This turned out to be the week’s best-selling opportunity as the consumer price index provoked prices down sharply on Wednesday and JP Morgan’s earnings projection fueled more losses on Friday.

Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending April 12:

The S-fund peaked at a 0.72% gain for the week on Tuesday. This is where this week’s top performer Tinslinger made their move to the G-fund. If you read last week’s TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up, you saw us praise Tinslinger for putting together the second-best return for that week with a move to the S-fund. Well, they impressed us with timing again by moving out of the S-fund on Tuesday before it took its plunge.

These two weeks of impressive market maneuvering have lifted Tinslinger up to second place in the TSP Talk AutoTracker standings. Tinslinger is a Premium Member so you will not see their name in the non-premium standings.

Tinslinger has the best return for April among all TSP Talk AutoTracker members by far. This month they have accumulated a gain of 1.02%. Second place, RexTheDog, has an April return of 0.18%. Third place goes to all the members who have held the G-fund all month.
