TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

Stocks had trouble holding on to early gains for the first three days of this week. The bulls were finally able to keep up their buying pressure on Thursday giving the three major indices, the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq, new all time closing highs. Those gains were reduced slightly Friday to give just a small gain for the week.

The I-fund outperformed the TSP funds with nearly a 3% gain for the week as the dollar weakened. The S-fund lagged with a slight loss as it was the only fund in red for the week.

Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending August 12th:

The SPY (S&P 500 / C-fund) hit an all-time high on Thursday before running into rising resistance which turned momentum around taking away the bulk of the weekly gains. There may have been support from the lows of June and August to keep the index in positive territory. However there is an open gap just below that may put the ball in the bear's hands next week as far as reasons to sell. The C-fund had a slight gain of 0.12% for the week.

The Dow Completion Index (S-fund) fell back below the support line of its late July trading channel. The index had a couple slight gains the following days to reduce the losses for the week. An open gap still lies below but we did see the 20-day EMA act as support the last time we thought the gap was going to get filled. The S-fund closed Friday with a loss of 0.02% for the week.

EFA (EAFE Index / I-fund) broke above overhead resistance as well as made a new 2016 high this week. The index has continued to rise after bouncing off its 200-day EMA last week and the gains have piled up. The I-fund outperformed the TSP funds with a gain of 2.85% for the week.

AGG (Bonds / F-fund) made its way to the top of the apex formation it has been within. The index was able to break above the declining resistance of the apex formation at the open and most intraday Friday but did fall back below by the close. The F-fund had a modest gain of 0.42% for the week.
