TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up - The S-fund Opportunity

The S-fund gave us an early buying opportunity early this last week, and we missed it. The market pulled back this previous Monday with all of the TSP funds outside of the G-fund starting their week with a loss. The worst of the damage came from the S-fund's 1.29% loss, this becomes more significant considering the C and I-funds' Monday losses were under 0.5%. But this S-fund Monday stumble turned out to be the best buying opportunity for the week. TSP investors who bought the S-fund on Monday would ride a gain of 3.74% over the next four days.

The trade would not have been easy to make. The chart did not look inviting after small caps struggled through January. But arguably there was a bull flag set up.

Ultimately, no member of the TSP Talk AutoTracker took that swing at the lagging S-fund on Monday. Coming into the week holding the S-fund may have stung after Monday, but those who stuck through the week with the fund were up 2.41%. Better off are those who have held the S-fund through the month of February. The S-fund is up 3.83% for the month, snapping back after its -2.41% loss in January.

Who did outperform the S-fund this week? Only two members among the TSP Talk AutoTracker members made an IFT this week that gave them a better return than the S-fund this week. Those members are BarbS and ward5820. Both members came off the sideline on Wednesday to buy 100% S-fund on Wednesday. They captured the S-fund's 2.46% return between Thursday and Fridays' gains.

BarbS came out on top with a 2.59% gain for the week because they were holding the L Income fund through Wednesday while ward5820's weekly return was 2.52% as they held 100% G-fund through Wednesday. The L Income Fund is equivalent to holding 69% G-fund, 6% F-fund, 13% C-fund, 3% S-fund, and 9% I-fund. This gave BarbS their 0.07% advantage for the week.

The community did get a boost this week. The S-fund is the most popular stock fund among the TSP Talk AutoTracker. Its non-premium participants have an average S-fund allocations of 31%. The most held fund is the G-fund with an average allocation of 33% among the non-premium members.
