Top Ten

I was in the top 10 for one day this month. Does that count as a congrats to me? :(

I agree with Sniper, first time out of the market in about 4 months. Got out because of the toppy reports and I just broke the 600K mark. Wanted to savor it a while... Waiting for the moment to get back in.

Congratulations on 600K, mind me asking how long it took you?

sweet that's some nice bank. I'm still trying to hit 50k haha, but I'm still rather new to the TSP system :)

I know this was not directed to me, but I have been in the 600K area for some time. All due to contributions and matching, no rolling in of outside accounts. Started TSP in '87, made it to 600K in Dec of '08. Got back up again to 600K finally in Jan '12. But sitting now at 595K. :(

600K has been my glass ceiling! Gotta find a way to crack thru it!! :o

Hard question. I was hired in '88 but being young and ignorant paid little attention to TSP not to mention didn't make very much. I remember way back about '94ish getting my quarterly statement and discovered I had lost 16k, about had a stroke. That's about the time I set out to learn as much as I can (still very little) about investing. That's the long way to tell you really about 17-18 years.

600K has been my glass ceiling also, been flirting with it for a while and finally broke through. That's why I wanted to savor it a while although it looks as though that was a mistake...

Oh yeah, no rolling in for me either. All contributions and matching also. The board really screwed us on the two moves per month. I feel as though I would have at least another 100k if it wasn't for that, maybe more. I would rather have all 24 for the year up front.

Looks like a couple of members here are @ about 600K and started in 87/88.

You might like a comparison to the dumb money from the same time. My glass ceiling is 200K. The highest I ever got was 196K in Nov 2007. There have been up and down years but my CAGR from 2000 through 2011 was -0.53%. Looks like smart investing can make quite a bit of difference. I'm another one who's been looking up at the G Fund ever since.

The long story:

I started with the government in June 1988. I had no rollover and contributed the max allowed into the G Fund. Through the 90s Coworkers kept telling me I needed to diversify and especially get into the C Fund (We didn't have S & I back then). I resisted because: 1) I was too conservative and 2) more importantly, I didn't know what I was doing.

Still not knowing what I was doing, I finally decided to give it a try but let this Y2K thing (remember that) settle down. I ended up going into C in May 2000 and it just went down from there. My system back then was Buy-N-Hold but after years it never came back up to where I had bought in at. I eventually gave up and tried following others and buying subscription services that circulated through the office. In retrospect that only led me to looking backwards at what had already happened and so I was severly following the market.

The last piece of advice I followed was to just put it all in an L Fund and leave it there. So, that's what I did in Nov 2007. The L Funds rebalance the mix every day which is supposed to optimize the daily jitters that is characteristic of the market. As we all know, the market doesn't go straight up or down. But then there was the Autumn (or should I say Fall) of 2008. The daily rebalancing of the L Funds just kept throwing good money after bad, so you had more money to lose the following day. I never knew you could lose money so fast. I also thought I'd have recovered it by now, but that too has proven elusive. I just can't get through that 200 K ceiling.

So there you have it. It looks like a rough estimate of the difference between the smart money and dumb money (or top of the AT to the bottom if you prefer) is 3 to 1. ;)

Cactus,

You are swinging. You really have to know what you are doing to be all in or all out of the equities funds. You are expecting things and bailing off of small wins. I would recommend either a 'scientific' allocation method or follow a trading system.

Here are your trades since early 2011:

Look at your comments. You are investing on feelings and hunches. Either invest methodically via allocations or technically via a system. Otherwise your lunch will be eaten by someone else.

By the way, we have all been there.

By the way folks.

Being in the Top 10 is great, being in the Top 20% year after year is better. That means you have to be in the Top 200.
