Fed's Moskow sees rate-hike possibility

Chicago Reserve president sees high inflation bigger risk than low growth.

November 16 2006: 11:26 AM EST

CHICAGO (Reuters) -- Chicago Federal Reserve President Michael Moskow on Thursday repeated the possible need for more interest rate increases to cool inflation, even though economic growth is likely to be slightly below trend for the next year or so.
"My current assessment is that the risk of inflation remaining too high is greater than the risk of growth being too low," Moskow said in comments prepared for a speech to an American Business Media meeting.

The comments repeated those from speeches given by Moskow last week. A copy of the text was made available in advance.
Inflation expectations have been contained, but if they were to increase "it would be incumbent on the Federal Reserve to adjust policy to affirm our commitment to price stability," said Moskow, who will be a voting member of the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee in 2007.
Inflation has been "too high" but should ease somewhat "over time," helped by lower energy prices and below-trend growth, he said.
