Think bureaucrats don't understand social media? Think again.
According to WebWire, neither Twitter, Facebook, Apple nor Google executives will be headlining the Social Media Conference at the Miami Beach Convention Center Jan. 23-30th. Instead, this year's keynote will be from The Department of Homeland Security.
Tom Millar of the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team, or USCERT, will be representing the agency during the week-long conference.
Millar, a veteran of the agency, oversaw the response to the 2007 digital denial of service (DDoS) attack against Estonian computers, the outbreak of the Conficker worm, as well as the DDoS attack against US government computers in 2009. For those unfamiliar with cyber warware - these are big events.
Millar's speech is expected to focus is expected to be on cybersecurity and social media, and his attendance marks the first keynote by a major government agency since the conference was first held in 2007.
Previous attendees included representatives from Bebo, Research in Motion, Google, and other Fortune 1000 companies.
Other topics for this year include handling sensitive information leaks, leveraging strategic communications on Twitter and Facebook, crisis management, and other social media-related issues.
Millar is no stranger to the conference circuit. As chief of communications at USCERT, Millar represented the agency at Boston University's Cyber Citizen Forum, the Virtual Analytics Community panel, and numerous others.
Founded in 2003, USCERT is tasked with coordinating responses with public and private sector institutions to a multitude of potential threats. As acting director, Millar has emphasized information sharing and knowledge exchange between various state, local and federal agencies.
The Social Networking Conference was started by Ticonderoga Ventures, inc. and is aimed at facilitating networking and information sharing on social media strategies, software and initiatives, including business, government and media solutions.
In addition to the Miami Conference, workshops will also be held later this year in Beverly Hills, California and Koln, Germany.
Attendance is open to all business professionals, government workers, and entrepreneurs working with or for social media companies, but it isn't cheap.
Those without budgets as well as attendees can follow the conference on Twitter or Facebook at @socialnetwrk and facebook.com/pages/socialnetworkingconference.
