Starbucks is giving incoming CEO Brian Niccol $85 million in cash and stock for leaving Chipotle

Starbucks plans to pay incoming CEO Brian Niccol $10 million in cash and $75 million in equity awards when he joins the company from Chipotle.

Niccol will be paid a base salary of $1.6 million annually, with the opportunity to earn up to $7.2 million more in cash.

As CEO, Niccol will have to turn around the coffee chain’s slumping business.

Starbucks new CEO Brian Niccol compensation Chipotle

High expectations, upfront money, and transformative plans are not always a strategy for success.

Ron Johnson only lasted 17 months after becoming JCPenney's CEO. Similarly to Niccol, Johnson had a track record of success as Apple's Vice President of Retail Operations, was offered a compensation package worth around $53 million, and had bold strategies in mind for his new company.

Those expectations quickly fell flat in Johnson's case with a sharp drop in revenue.

But Starbucks investors seem to be very hopeful for success with Niccol.
