Ship hits bridge in Baltimore- major damage

A ship just hit the Key Bridge in Baltimore, and collapsed the bridge. The bridge carried I-695 traffic over the bay- and it looks like 20 people missing from cars on the bridge.

Wow.

Well- let’s think. Luckily it was at 1:30 in the morning- minimal people on the bridge at that moment. Some police scanner talk says about 20 people may be missing. All on the ship are ok.

The bridge has been destroyed. That’s I-695, a major artery around Baltimore. It’s GONE.

And no doubt the sea lane is blocked. No cargo in or out of Baltimore. I’m thinking weeks maybe.

What will they do to Wall street today?

Hopefully minimal damage. If the market takes a left turn not much we can do now. Although it might be a few days before the market reacts depending on how long the port is closed.
Prayers for those that lost family members.

another terrorist attack on American history??

Francis Scott Key
American lawyer and poet who wrote The Star-Spangled Banner (1779-1843)

My first thought when I heard the news this morning was "terrorist attack", but that does not appear to be the case. In addition to the folks traveling the bridge when this occurred, there were workers on the bridge performing maintenance. This is typical and avoids disrupting traffic during the day.

As for the economic impact, the harbor will be closed as no ship traffic can enter or leave until the waterways are cleared. Ship traffic can be diverted to Norfolk, Philadelphia and New York. As for road traffic, the Fort McHenry and Harbor Tunnels will be affected as traffic will be diverted through those locations until the Francis Scott Key bridge is rebuilt. This means heavier traffic and longer delays for those traveling the I-95 corridor. All this will negatively affect inflation due to major delays in imports and exports.

On a personal note, I have traveled over the Key bridge more times than I can count. In fact, the last time I picked my girlfriend up from the airport, we crossed the Key bridge as a cargo ship was going underneath. She was amazed at the size of the ship as we drove over the bridge. It was such an experience for her as this is something she has never seen in her part of the country.

Prayers for all those involved in this tragic event, to include the victims, their families, police and fire rescue and port authority,
