My wife is in Salt lake city at a conference. She can't get over how nice everyone is. After talking to her last night, I'm afraid I might have to move to Salt Lake City.

Is Salt Lake City niceness normal or has she just been lucky?

My background is Detroit, Cleveland, and DC. So I might be jaded.

It's been my experience that Utahns are polite and friendly people, unless you're on the freeway or at a Jazz game. Then all bets are off.:nuts:

But as a general rule, sounds like your wife is having a typical reaction to people who, for instance, will wave you to the front of the grocery line if you only have two items.

We're also "Donkey challenged" in Virginia. However, that situation is changing rapidly. We'll probably have two Democratic senators after the next election - Webb and Warner. We already have a Democratic governor. In 2000 all of those positions were firmly held by Republicans.---Jim

Definitely true that there are more elephants than donkeys in Utah. At times it feels like I'm the only Democrat in the state! The official count is that the state is about two-thirds Republican, but one of our 5 congressional delegation is a Democrat.

There's no doubt it's a conservative state, but it's a friendly one with a reasonable cost of living, great winter sports, I have a palm tree in my front yard, and the picture I use as my avatar is the view from my mailbox!!

I am a transplant in the state for only 41 years, I have lived in several areas of the country and having spent 7 yrs active and an additional 20 yrs in the reserves, I have been exposed to many cultures. The one thing I like most about Utah is; even though it is mostly republican, (in this case meaning conservative), the votes and moods are almost always pro family and pro "friendly". I am a republican by declaration, but I seldom if ever vote party line. I think 90-95% of the state does the same.
The "friendly experience" is the norm, but I have found that in other parts of the country, just seldom in cities elsewhere.

Nice, educated folks here. Very internet savvy. Reasonable real estate prices. Strange alcohol laws. New commuter train just constructed running in and out of SLC.

Born in Brooklyn, grew up in Suffolk County on Long Island (about 40 miles east of NYC).

I am not a mormon. They gave up trying to convert me many years ago. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

My husband dealt with the FLDS in his law enforcement years. They are a radical fundamentalist cult completely separate from the mormons. And they sacrifice their children's innocence in the name of religion.

Can you tell I feel strongly about the subject?

In addition, her family is here, our son is here, and, her work is here.

I'd like to move to Detroit. However, for some reason, she's not too enthusiastic about cold Michigan winters and Detroit's black snow and slush. :laugh:-----Jim

SLC is pretty cosmopolitan and there you can find whatever you are looking for. However, you will:

* Be considered a pariah if you smoke, drink coffee and use alcohol.
* Find all your friends are non-Mormon.
* Be bewildered by the tenets of Momonism once you plumb their depths.
* Become a smuggler of alcoholic beverages every time you leave the state.
* Learn to conserve water.
* Come to dread dry thunderstorms -- i.e., dust storms.

In my career of 30 years, two of my three best bosses ever, were Mormons. The people of SLC, mostly Mormons, helped to launch my career and were very kind to me. You can trust them -- Howard Hughes' personal attendants were all Mormons, for an extreme example. But their religion is odd. I'm not criticising; their beliefs are up to them and it's a free country. Personally I have no religious preference. Nonetheless most adhere strictly and this colors everything when you live in Utah.

Some advice: Get in your car and circumnavigate the entire state every year, in different seasons. Take a night class in geology. Prepared to be thrilled.
