Reputable online Gun Purchase Site

Hey guys and gals,

I'm overwhelmed by the number of sites and the wide ranges of prices for the 2 guns I am looking for. I've always bought from an owner in the past but my daughter wants a gun for college graduation next spring. Either a Lady Smith & Wesson 3913, which, I've been told they no longer make, or a S&W 908S which is the equivalent gun. I've seen them from $400 and up to $700.

Can I get some recommendations of trustworthy sites that'll sell ya a good gun especially if it's used.

Thanks for any help. :)

Buds Guns seems to have a good reputation with the forums I frequent.

Impact Guns seems to be one of the worst, with slow delivery times and not keeping advertised items in stock.

If you're looking for used, you might have better luck looking at the Auction sites like Gun Broker.

If you find a store you want info on, then I'd join up on THR and do a search. THR seems to be one of the biggest Gun Forums with the most information.

Keep in mind, that with shipping cost and the FFL transfer fee, you might be better off looking for something in the local area.

Good luck :)

CB,

All the above advice is excellent, let me add mine. A lot of local FFL's (licensed firearms dealers) will locate a firearm for you...most of the time for free or a minimal charge. Once they do, you can buy from a local dealer without going through the hassle of buying from someone you don't know. Just a thought...

Thanks for the advice BigJohn,

I just happened to contact a local dealer in town this morning, just to get a price idea, because I knew he didn't have what I was looking for, but he offered to contact other dealers around the country and try to track one down for me. I'd asked him about the guns several months before and he didn't offer, but he did this time. Who knows. Now I'll keep my fingers crossed. :D

Speaking of.....

Looks like there is a bright spot in the economy.

Gun sales are way up this week, following the election.

Obama's Election Sparks Gun Sales

Up in Arms: Post-Election Fears Cause Surge in Gun Sales

While shoppers are cutting back on almost everything, sales of one item are suddenly soaring -- guns. Buyers across the country are snapping up firearms at a record pace

On fear that new government may change firearms laws, gun sales skyrocket.

At 9 a.m. today, the counter was already crowded at Cheaper Than Dirt, a discount gun and ammunition store in Fort Worth, Texas.

"Everyone is here for the same reason: Buy it now or you're not going to have a chance in the future," said Charlie Street, a gun owner.

At Cheaper Than Dirt alone, more than $100,000 in guns and ammunition have been sold every day since Election Day. Buyers are stocking up before President-elect Barack Obama takes office.

(note- I'd wager that guns will not be a priority at all in the future. Maybe gun-show loophole closing, but that's about all. Obama promised respect for the 2nd Amendment- and the facts and figures after the last assualt-weapons ban showed there was nothing gained. I would wager that I'll still be able to pick up an AR-15 this time two or three years from now without difficulty.).

P.S.-

If you want to buy me a Christmas present- here is the one on my wish list:

AR-15A2, 20 inch H-BAR, please.

Very Sweet James. :D I heard on CNBC yesterday that the 2 hottest selling items were safes (folks keeping more cash on hand) and guns (Don't need to go there).

Prices have gone through the roof in the last week.

I had my eye on a nice Model 6600 H-Bar. A month ago the value was around $850 or so. This week, on auction sites, the price is above $1200.

I guess too many people think they are going to go away. Too bad. My sources say there is no motivation at all and no priority at all to legislate anything in this area at the national level. It's just not going to happen.

But- if you are looking for a good place to invest your money right now, I guess this is about as good a place as any other...

I bought some ammo yesterday and the dealer said you can't hardly find an AR15 and he had sold over $7000 of Ammon since Tuesday. As James said, it might be a good investment.

All you left-handed vets are probably already on top of this issue. Me, the last time I took a riflery or shotgun class was about 8 years ago and nobody has ever checked me on this so before I buy anything, if I ever do, I'll need to figure this out. I'll use the info in this article to help me figure out appropriate item for purchase, being a lefty but suspect may be right-eyed, not confirmed yet.....

"On your lefty shooter, make SURE you do a master-eye test on him. If he is actually a right master-eye, he must be re-taught to shoot righty. Since there are almost ZERO true lefty pistols, and only ONE lefty revolver (Charter Arms .38), it's damn hard to get REALLY good as a lefty shooting righty guns. To do that test, get a quarter-size washer out of your collection, and have him hold it out at arms length IN HIS LEFT FIST and "sight" with it on your nose while you observe his eye travel (nystagmus) WITH BOTH EYES OPEN. If he is using his right eye to sight with, it will be apparent. Have him switch to his right hand to confirm. YOU can practice this in the mirror to see what it will look like, just be aware that you are seeing the reverse image of what is actually there and you have to get your mind around that reverse image. Also, that DAO plastic-fantastic he bought is probably like most of the Glock-patent guns and will be VERY sensitive to limp-wristing, promoting several times more chance of misfires than he would have with a JMB-patent weapon (PBUH!). I've heard of (expensive) mods being made to JMB-patent weapons to make sure that they eject directly to the side instead of backwards.

BTW, some say that it is actually dangerous for a lefty to shoot a righty pistol, and the worst of them would be the .45, due to the weight of it's spent hulls. If he gets one directly in the eye, open end first, it WILL ruin his eye. So, you say, I make him wear eye protection. Good. Now let's say he doesn't normally wear eyeglasses, and he is carrying and has to shoot for self defense....

BTW, all that hot gas, powder particles, etc impacting his face and spent hulls whizzing past his face are probably the reason that he's such a poor shot. YOU would have a hard time shooting in that environment. If he is a TRUE lefty (as opposed to a true righty and a TAUGHT lefty), I'd abandon any idea of teaching him with a DA pistol. Send him to the gun shop and have him order one of the Charter Arms Lefty's and teach him how to use that .38 properly as a lefty (for reloads, etc). If he is a TRUE lefty, he will amaze you with how fast he picks up competent gunning with that little revolver. BTW, that gun is very light, has an AL frame, so don't have him shoot a lot of +P in it. Tell him to reserve the +P shells for defense (Box of 20, use 5 in the gun, 10 for reloads, and shoot the other five for familiarization, RAPID FIRE at under 21 feet). "

It took over 3 hours Wednesday to get my background check approved to buy a "used" Remington model 700, 30-06 at a local pawn shop in Columbia, TN. It's always taken around 10 or 15 minutes in my own personal experience, before. The pawn shop owner is also a deputy with the county sheriff's office. After the first hour of waiting, he called the T.B.I. to see what the problem might be and was told that their "system" had crashed due to an overload of requests. The agent that he spoke with said that he had over 300 requests to process (himself) that day. That was only his share of the workload, not the department total.

Hopefully, these record breaking sales might help boost the economy? :D I think I'll look into buying a few shares of gun-related stocks.
State Gun Sales Reach Record Levels
December 11, 2008 ( excerpts from article)

Guns and Leather is the second largest gun dealer in the state. Managers said sales there have gone up more than 300 percent since the election.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation runs a background check every time a gun is sold across the state. It has been bombarded with work: More than 38,000 checks this November as compared to just 24,000 in November of last year.

With December traditionally the hottest month of the year for gun sales, it remains to be seen whether another record will be shattered.

Since the election, 46,382 guns have been sold in Tennessee, not including those sold Thursday.

Many have said the economy played a role in their decision to buy a weapon.

For what it is worth, the poor mans eye dominance test is easy to do. Extend both hands out in front of you with each forming a peace sign, or if an old republican, in the classic Richard Nixon (tricky Dicky) V-signs. Cross the fingers, arms extended to form a sort of square that you can see through. With both eyes open pick an object to look at through this square, a door knob is good but anything will work. Keep both eyes open and move your fingers back till they touch your nose, your dominant eye will be looking at the object still, be it right or left. A left hand shooter with right eye dominance has some issues (it goes both ways, however). I put up a link to an article on the subject, me I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous. The author is well known in the gun world especially now with the whole CCW thing. For the most part the 2A crowd is pretty freaked out with Obama, assuming that we are on a slippery slope and will very soon have all our guns taken away, registration is the first step, I don't buy that myself. In the land of Texas and John Wayne not to mention the "pry my cold dead hand off my gun" mentality I don't see it but it's possible, hell we elected a black man President, never thought I'd see that in my life (I voted for him too). I'm kind of not your normal guy, gun owner, legal to CCW (no hunting guns) and an egg-head liberal in favor of tough gun laws. Whatever your politics on the gun debate just make sure your weapon is secured (gun safe) there is little more tragic than a dead child because an adult left a gun in a nightstand. For less than $70 you can get a "touch combo" gun-safe to secure your weapon, a simple panic code like two fingers/two buttons at once and then bang on the end button till the sucker opens will work even in terror situations and add a layer of protection to those who should not have access. Better yet, a pump shotgun and NO shells, nothing has that sound.

Dr.Scooter,
Very good information thank you. Gun safety is a number one priority in the home and I am a firm believer in teaching the next generation too. They must not fear guns, stick shifts, or people with different opinions. Embrace them all and life is better.
