Newbie conundrum: I'm interested in trying my hand at picking individual stocks, but when I called the brokerage that holds my Roth IRA, they advised me that they charge $19.99 each time I buy, sell, or trade stocks.

What services have you had success with?

I've never purchased stocks, so I'd appreciate any other suggestions you may have.

Thanks!

I have two brokerage accounts, one with Scottrade and one with TradeKing. I'm very pleased with both of them, but for a newbie I think that TradeKing would be best. They have award winning customer service. I think Scottrade's strong point is their research tools.

I have used Zecco in the past and thought the software was clunky, but others on the MB like it and I think they upgraded their platform earlier this year.

This site was very helpful to me when I was choosing my broker. Maybe it will help you too. http://www.brokerage-review.com/ And most sites will let you open an account and experiment with their platform before you fund your account. That's a great way to make sure that your choice really fits you.

Good luck!

Ann
