• Interfax reports that a Malaysian plane has crashed in Ukraine
• The plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur

16.20 The plane is thought to have crashed near Shaktersk.

16.15 Interfax news agency are claiming that a Malaysian passenger plane has crashed in Ukraine, near the Russian border.

"A Boeing Malaysian Airlines that was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur began to descend about 50km before entering Russian airspace, and was subsequently found burning on the ground in Ukraine," an aviation source told Interfax.

Interfax said that 295 people were on board at the time.

Less than an hour ago, Ukraine claimed Russia shot down one of it's SU-25 fighter jets along the border between Ukraine and Russia.

What do you want to bet that the Malaysian BVoeing 777 was mistaken for a Ukrainian fighter and shot down by Russia?

A Russian jet has shot down a Ukrainian war plane, Ukraine’s military has claimed, in a dramatic escalation of tensions on the two countries' common border.

The spokesperson said the incident happened at about 7pm local time.

“A war plane of the Russian armed forces carried out a rocket attack on an Su-25 of the Ukrainian armed forces, which was carrying out missions on Ukrainian territory,” the spokesman said. “Our plane was shot down, the pilot ejected and was evacuated to a safe place.”

The Russian defence ministry has not commented on the allegation.

However, rebel forces claimed to have downed two of the jets on Wednesday and another on Tuesday. They have also claimed responsibility for the downing of an An-26 transport aircraft shot down on Monday.

. Looks like at least four different planes shot down in last 48 hours.

Also reports last night of Russian Army surface to air missile military unit driving inside Ukraine and in that area last night .
 
I remember gong on Alert in Germany after the Russians shot down Korean Air flight 007 in 1983. Spent hours in the woods -the first time I ever had live ammo being issued to me whole in uniform.

Now we don't even have enough armed forces left to make a statement.
 
We were there at the same time. I also remember Reagan vs. Qaddafi in 1986 and the USS Vincennes in 1988.

23 Americans on Malaysian flight

Victims were strewn up to 10 miles away from the crash site.

Their nationalities were not immediately available, but Reuters reported 23 were U.S. citizens. German broadcaster RTL reported that 71 Dutch nationals were aboard. Nine British nationals and four French were also on the flight.

The maps I saw on the news earlier today showed losing contact with the plane just inside the Ukraine western border... no where near the eastern boarder with Ruissia.

I'll see if I can find them.

That map came from a program called "Flightaware".
FlightAware - Flight Tracker / Flight Status / Flight Tracking


It has a 10 minute built in delay in the display of the track.

The actual track continues until 30 miles from Russian boarder, then disappears.

Right, I know my image was from Flightaware. I've used similar sites before to track my own flights. I'm not saying that is the source of what the news used... I have no idea what they used; but the map they showed this morning was similar to that one. I just searched google images to find one that looked like what I remember seeing. The graphics were different, but the trail ended at about the same spot... no where near Russia.

I'm curious as to why the huge discrepancy between the two flight paths... This was after 11am EST.

What were they thinking when they flew right over a WAR ZONE? Is this the same airlines that lost the 777 off of Somalia? Funny thing about that, but NOT funny.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Video of a rocket launcher, one surface-to-air missile missing, leaving the likely launch site. Imagery showing the firing. Calls claiming credit for the strike. Recordings said to reveal a cover-up at the crash site.

"A buildup of extraordinary circumstantial evidence ... it's powerful here," said Secretary of State John Kerry, a former prosecutor, and it holds Russian-supported rebels in eastern Ukraine responsible for shooting down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, with the Kremlin complicit in the deaths of nearly 300 passengers and crew members.

"This is the moment of truth for Russia," said Kerry, leveling some of Washington's harshest criticism of Moscow since the crisis in Ukraine began.

"Russia is supporting these separatists. Russia is arming these separatists. Russia is training these separatists, and Russia has not yet done the things necessary in order to try to bring them under control," he said.
