Outage affects 6 million in Calif

REALLY?...A Power Plant unable to support it's own Power...Is that Irony or what? I wonder if they ever found it again...

It is ironic.....unfortunately, design of a nuclear power plant requires that the cooling system be powered by commercial electricity to be able to acutally RUN the reactor.

It's the primer for the power....Yes it may be ironic, but when you think about it, it makes perfect sense....If the reactor lost power, it's cooling system would overheat and meltdown would occur.

so it's using it own power to cool itself down?

Boghie buddy, ever consider entering Japanese poetry contests? You'd be a winner if they had an economic theme competition, for sure.

Law87,

It uses other sources of power for cooling. A nuclear reactor shuts itself off if those external power sources are not available. Chicken and Egg problem.:)

Search "black start" to get more information than you ever wanted about this subject. The wicki article isn't perfect but will give you an idea.

Third World: Norte California...

To All,

We are on boiled water alert here in SoCal.

The folks at work thought I was nuts for telling them to buy water and fill their tubs yesterday.
Finally, that Y2K training and self thought provided some value.

Yowser.

I would say that the report is not totally accurate. I oversee the maintenance and operations of the high voltage systems at Glenn. I also have a systems manager I report to. The plants went offline because of relays that monitor what is happening inside and outside the plant in order to protect the plant. I would imagine that the backup generators would have kicked in to maintain safety systems and lighting. Also the generators would allow the system to restart.

Yowser,

I'm famous. I was just trying to comment on one of Glenn Reynold's (Instupundit) snippets on the SoCal power outage and viola!!! I don’t mind using the ‘Black Swan Event President’ moniker here because financially astute individuals know what a ‘Black Swan Event’ is – and our President often risks them whenever he talks things economic. But, I’m not certain the general public understands.

And, yes, the stuff about filling a bathtub and having bottled water is true. A power outage can easily affect water supply and sewage removal. The effects are not good. If you cannot wait out the issues you have to jump in your car and transport your buttocks to a region that is not affected. Luckily – actually thank you San Diego Water District – the fresh water supply was not widely disrupted or polluted.

Finally, yes, I was a czar before czars became popular. That is actually what they called the Y2K guy back then. What a dumb job. I had goobers trying to get me to test every personal computer. I tested models and releases and made a database of the good, the bad, and the ugly. I tested applications that we built and maintained – but we had built them Y2K compliant from 1991 onward. I looked at official applications and helped identify problems. All in all not a difficult job. Kinda part time – which annoyed the goobers.

So, me got my 15 seconds of fame!!!

You've always been famous to us Bohgie.

15 minutes? Naah, that was only a couple. You still got some comin to ya.

You know what happens during power outages, don't you?

It's true:

Power outage leads to 'baby boom'

By The Ottawa Citizen, October 29, 2008

A small community has recorded a 44-per-cent rise in births nine months after a power outage plunged its 23,000 inhabitants into darkness for two days, a spokeswoman said yesterday. In December, the blades of a helicopter accidentally severed the high voltage cables providing electricity to the nine villages in the municipality of Maasdriel, and power remained off for 50 hours. In September, 26 babies were born in Maasdriel, eight more than the total of a year earlier, the spokeswoman said.

You gotta watch out for that stuff.
