Oil Companies Going Bankrupt? Gimme a break

alevin,

Herd him toward a gov job, he is a veteran.

Thanks, Show-Me. I'll work on that. He probably isn't familiar with USAJOBS yet. He went straight to diesel tech school from Navy, and from there to a major brandname outfit for a few years and from there to current location for family-proximity reasons. He has been looking into state-employment possibilities but not fed AFAIK. He has no desire to return to a supervisory position with boodles of paperwork. He had enough of that as a chief in the service.

I too have a family member that is a "suicide jockey" and he got the axe about three weeks ago.

I'm a bit worried about my brother (2d career=diesel mechanic, working for outfit that services big rigs broke down on interstate as part of primary business). He says he's still fulltime employed but business is too slow for him. He's bored (former navy chief 23 years in weapons control-20-hour days, 6-7 days a week, not sure he's found his slowdown button yet. :worried:).

He's going to start looking for a different job after the new year, only been with current employer a year, just bought a house last fall (I prayed he'd wait longer for prices to come down, but he just couldn't stand renting a small house for $1K a month, had done that for a year already. He ended up with 6%, zero down, 30-year fixed for house 1.5x what I paid for mine (he could've put down 20% but realtor and mortgage broker talked him out of it.). He's satisfied with his deal, Just hope he stays employed so he can keep making the payments now. At least he got 30-year fixed and not one of those dam ARMS.

One of my close family members is a "suicide jockey" which is industry slang for being a long-haul transporter of gasoline. He works for a major industry player, his company has just finished their second round of layoffs and he's not sure how long he is going to have a job.

This economy isn't kind to anyone I guess. :worried:

Federal employees need to count their blessings! Wish I was still one. ;)
