Oil change-- Do you do it yourself?

How do you accomplish oil changes?

  • I take it to the dealership and get genuine parts and oil from the car maker

I was just about to head out to the auto parts store to pick up an oil filter, and four quarts of oil for my car. I always have done my own oil changes.

But these days, I rarely save any money doing it myself. In fact, one local place where they do it- is doing oil + filter for $16.95- At the store it's going to cost me more than that just to buy four quarts and a filter.

So my question is- Do you do your own oil changes?
Or do you have a favorite big discount place that you do it?
Or do you pay a brand-name place, or even a car dealership, where you pay considerably more for an oil change?

How do you do it?

Just curious.....

Older car goes to the oil change shop, the new car goes to the dealership (free maintenance first 50,000 miles). The combination of time, effort and expense to do it yourself never worked out in my favor. Happy to have somebody else do it.

I always use synthetic so it's much cheaper to do it myself, besides I'm not a lazy xxx always have DIY.

The cost of disposal in California is prohibitive. Since the shops have mass recycle containers, it's barely a blip on their costs....It also allows me to say I'm PRO JOBS!

In GA we have recycling centers that take the stuff FREE. Another reason to move to GA.!

Always done it myself. It doesn't save me much, but I just don't trust others to work on my stuff. I do all my service and repairs at home. Of course it helps that I worked at a dealer as a Auto Tech for about 9 years and have kept good relations with them so I get a great price on parts.

Same here...I use Castrol Edge or Royal Purple..I pour the waste oil down the sewer at the street curb..no muss no fuss.

I dont do my own because 1. i dont have a garage so i dont have a place to keep my tools and i dont have a place to do it 2. I'm forgetful, god knows its only a matter of time when I forget to screw back on the screw.

i ussually go to the store (any of them except for jiffy lube due to the recent news that they do not change people oil) I use full synthetic and depend on the weight of the oil it'll cost any where from 60-130. I ussually change the weight of oil in the summer and winter.

Since the Obama admin. has choked oil production in this country..I did the following oils and lubes changes with 100% synthetics, so not to put any further burdon on the already crazy lack of American oil and gasoline availability.

Did today:

Oil and filter change; 7 qts of 5w30 Castrol Edge + AC PF-61E filter.
Front and rear Differential lubes; 4.5 qts of 75w90 Royal Purple gear lube.

Replaced all four Shocks with new AYB Gas-A-Just

Total savings DIM; $400.00 + free excersize

Put $400.00 savings into my IRA and appreciated a Tax credit for the contribution..I'm expecting to get a 9% earnings on the $400 this quarter...bringing my grand total savings to $965.00

Seriously..Used Oils went to a recycler.:notrust:
