Obama's Job Approval Rating - All Time Low

Most recent NBC/WSJ poll shows the nation believes less in Obama than it did in George Bush just after Katrina.

A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds President Barack Obama’s job-approval rating at 41%, which matches a previous low. Approval of his handling of foreign policy hit a new low of 37%. Both numbers are driven in part by a series of conflicts largely outside the president’s control, including the latest wave of sectarian violence in Iraq.

The poll of 1,000 adults, conducted between Wednesday and Sunday, highlights what appears to be a lasting slide in his public image.

APPROVAL RATING AT A LOW

41%
President Barack Obama’s approval rating is as low as it has ever been during his presidency. Unable to push his agenda through Congress and weighed down with global trouble spots in Iraq, Syria and Ukraine, Mr. Obama has never been less popular.

FOREIGN POLICY DISAPPROVAL RATING UP

57%
People who disapprove of Mr. Obama’s foreign policy has increased 11 percentage points in the last year. And it is happening at the worst possible time for a president who staked his first campaign on a promise to end the Iraq war. Now tensions in Iraq are exploding again.

ON THE RIGHT TRACK?

25%
Only a quarter of people think the country is on the right track. During Mr. Obama’s presidency, the number has only been lower during the 2013 government shutdown and after the debt-ceiling brinkmanship of 2011.

A SHIFT AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE

18- to 34-year-olds
Young people once served as one of the pillars of Mr. Obama’s political support, along with African Americans and Hispanics. But now young voters are just as disillusioned with the president as the public at large: Only 41% approve of the job he is doing as president–down from a high in the 60s.

VIEWS ON COMPETENCY FELL

50%
The number of people who think the Obama administration is competent fell from 57% one year ago. The figure is lower than the 53% who thought President George W. Bush was competent in March 2006–months before Democrats won a landslide victory in that year’s midterm elections.
