Obama Public Stimulus Package Speech

Mea culpa, I thought they said on CNN it was voted out. But I may have misheard, and I can't find a confirm. I guess all I heard was the protesting with promises to remove it....sigh.

Sigh, the President needs to be more bold, forget the tax cuts if he really thinks infrastructure = jobs and tax cuts = hoarding like last time. Oh, and he needs to kick some bankers in the TARP.

Silverbird,

Amen on the TARP kicking, just leave a few for the rest of us.

["Inhofe says he personally met with President Barack Obama Monday to point out that the $30 billion earmarked for infrastructure represents only 3 percent of the total amount of the spending bill. “When I told him that, he didn't believe it was that small a percentage,” Inhofe says. ”I said, ‘If we find that I'm right and you're wrong, would you go up to 10 percent?’ And he said, ‘I'd certainly look at that.’ Since then, he realizes that I am right. As far as roads and highways, it's $30 billion, and then a few [dollars] for water infrastructure.” Inhofe believes it is the infrastructure improvements that could provide real jobs, while spurring the economy."]

CB, Inhofe sounds like a man with common sense to me.
I'm not familiar with his record, except for a google-look just now.
So far, I read that he uses terms like "hoax" and "scam" while
discussing global warming.:) He supports Israel, as well. What's
not to like! Sadly, it's unlikely that BHO will listen to him.

I'm still huntin' for a clue about the STD funding issue. I don't
really think I'll find it though.:suspicious:

Yeah Budnipper,

I get the same read from this guy, but our Ok feds may have a better read, but I would vote for him in a heartbeat. BHO was just blowing sunshine up Inhofe skirt, nothing but plain old political lip service, all show and no go.

While trying to run down total infrastructure for the Corps, cause I don't want to give out misleading data, I ran across thefollowing link, ASCE, is the American Society of Civil Engineers, who is involved in most major projects in the US, Katrina and the bridge collapse are 2 examples, anyhoo they have the following information on our Infrastructure needs.

2009 Report Card for America's Infrastructure
Produced by the American Society of Civil Engineers

The Report Card is an assessment by professional engineers of the nation's status in 15 categories of infrastructure. In 2009, all signs point to an infrastructure that is poorly maintained, unable to meet current and future demands, and in some cases, unsafe. Since the last Report Card in 2005, the grades have not improved. ASCE estimates the nation still stands at a D average. Deteriorating conditions and inflation have added hundreds of billions to the total cost of repairs and needed upgrades. ASCE's current estimate is $2.2 trillion, up from $1.6 trillion in 2005.

These folks are the experts when it comes to our needs, so $30 million is an insult to the intelligence of the American people, when that's all they are going to put towards what they are calling the Infrastructure Stimulus Package. Lets call the package what it is, Welfare and Earmarks, politics as usual. Real infrastruture will lift this country up for years to come.

http://www.asce.org/reportcard/2009/index.html

It's a great breakdown of what and where the money needs to go. Shoot I believe we built the Pentagon in just one year, so all we need is for the Pols get out of the way and we can get back on our feet. But these give away programs will just prolong the agony, but the unproductive and lazy love'em.

Well, we can always hope that common sense will rule the day, but with Senators like Al Frankin, I don't like the IQ level being exhibited in the Senate. This is just a perfect example of where the quality of so called leaders is headed. :(

Budnipper,

I've been searching for confirmation of the funding removal, but have yet to find any mention or link. Of course this is just one of many welfare earmarks embedded stealthily in a hugh INFRASTRUCTURE stimuls package, but it looks, smells and walks like a huge welfare bailout for the unproductive, at our costs. CB

No mention of the STD funding one way or the other in this article, but highway infrastructure gets a whopping 3% and BHO couldn't believe it was that small. Infrastructure rebuilding could go on for decades. Our infrastructure is decades old and falling apart. The COE alone has years of infrastructure backlog, that Congress won't fund.

What source did you use to confirm that STD funding has been removed from the proposed bill? I have not found it yet.

It's gone, no more STD funding. Now you see what it's like to REALLY see what's in the sausage. Isn't that a good thing?? You can actually embarass it into going AWAY and not staying. Before you could add more riders than on a roller coaster.

If we are worried about Government debt, we need to raise taxes, not cut them. So why are the suddenly fiscally concerned saying cut taxes? Are we worried about the pile of DEBTwe are already in, or not? You can't pay off the debt if you bring in less money! So which is it? Less Debt or try to help the economy with spending and tax cuts? One or the Other! You can't have cake and not get the calories!

Sorry for the interruption.... but am taking too much of Silverbird's home.

Just in case you're heading out soon - I hope you have a wonderful trip and that this 50th event is like the greatest highlight of their lives.

Well be safe and take care

Hey budnipper,
I commented on the $335 elsewhere on the MB and it sure wasn't pretty. CB
I'll bet you are referring to this one?? May I add, "DITTO"? :D

This is part of our economic stimulus package?

http://www.drudgereport.com/flashsb.htm

The House Democrats’ bill includes $335 million for sexually transmitted disease (STD) education and prevention programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

In the past, the CDC has used this STD education funding for programs that many Members of Congress find objectionable and arguably unrelated to a mission of economic stimulus [such as funding events called “Booty Call” and “Great Sex” put on by an organization that received $698,000 in government funds.]
This is just one of the many earmarks that I've rea about in our Stimulus package. If this is an example of the "earmarks", that aren'r suppose to be in the package, then we are in trouble. BHO had better read these guys the riot act, atarting with Harry Reid and his Mobster museum, now that'll really get folks off the unemployment line.
Anf they said the Big 3 were tone deaf, Congress is both tone deaf and brain dead.
And folks wonder why some of us are cynical and have no faith in the Gov't to do the right thing.:(
CB

I am electing to leave my opinion out of this. Please form you own conclusions without hearing my "biased" opinion...:D

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Will spending $50 million (35 million pounds) to promote arts in the United States help stimulate the U.S. economy? How about $335 million to educate people about sexually transmitted diseases?

It looks like BHO is going to give a public speech, tentatively scheduled for Thursday.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0109/17039.html

I wonder if Thursday or Friday may be a good day to be in the market, since it seems to be driven my Gov't bailouts or bailout news. If the markets are down Mon - Wed, then it might be a decent play, but then he also meets with Congress today, so the news may get baked in before Thursday. Also a lot of economic news coming out this week.
