He was apparently the only man ever to be nominated for the Medal of Honor three times for three separate acts of heroism in combat in a 13 month period.

In one 54-month period he was wounded 14 times.

He served five tours of duty in Vietnam.

He participated in two John Wayne movies concerning airborne and special operations missions, making a parachute jump for The Longest Day and serving as an airborne instructor for The Green Berets. He held two masters degrees from Central Michigan University.

He retired in 2006 after 52 years of government service. In recent years, he had toured Iraq and Afghanistan to visit the men and women in uniform.
