This is known as the central bank put, whereby policymakers do “whatever it takes” to help support asset prices such as equities, bonds and, more importantly for main street, housing prices. The put has been a backstop for investors since Wall Street’s Black Monday crash in 1987 prompted the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates the following day, thereby placing a floor under the stock market. The bond market has also latched on to tumbling oil prices, with US inflation break-evens for the next decade falling to their lowest level this year, as another reason for why the Fed will soon pause tightening.
