Kawzman's Account Talk

I've been thinking about terminating contributions to TSP and starting to invest in precious metals such as gold or silver. I'll leave what is there and continue to market time as always. I have done well over the last 12 months, bringing in 27% with some excellent market timing by moving between the S and G funds. With the market uncertainty and indicators pointing to something bad looming on the horizon for the market, all the while gold and silver has been performing well for a while now, it seems like precious metal investing may be a good idea. Any thoughts from my fellow TSPers? I'm not really sure how to best get invested in gold or silver, any suggestions should I decide to move in that direction? Thanks for the input.

Cheers

IMO, keep your contributions going to get the matching funds. That is guarantied money even if you are just sitting in the G fund. Use the dollar cost averaging approach with your new contributions.

Only a small percentage of your total portfolio should be in metals. Be careful and only wager what you can live without.

Here is a article I read yesterday, I don't endorse it but it is a good read and makes you think of other options.

Good luck and welcome to the MB.

show-me, what did you mean by "keep your contributions going to get the matching funds"?

nnuut, thnx.

I assumed u are at a agency that has a match to your contributes. My mistake. Still you should contribute to the TSP for diversity.

First I immensely admire your style of moving between S and G and that in itself shows you're one of the BEST.

By gaining 27% over the past 12 months you would largely prove you've lost your Financial Integrity by doing anything as dumb your present reflections.

1. Gold and Silver have already enormously had their 'rally' and you would NOT come out ahead.

2. Tonto had his ear againt the ground

and the Lone Ranger asked him what on earth he was doing.

He said, 'I'm listening to the rumbling of many hoofs - a huge stampede is happening.

The Lone Ranger seemed confused and perplexed...

Tonto said, 'The bulls are weak and running for their lives. The Bears are far more powerful and chasing them and tearing them apart and getting stronger and more powerful as they kill them and eat them.'

SO - my friend - WELCOME TO THE MB! - but seriously think it through.

I moved to G today for everything you are expressing. I am now stock piling every penny as the most 'Wonderful and Delightful FALL is underway'.

Why is it 'Wonderful' - because the last one was total garbage and wholly based on 'Dumb Money' thinkin' the cat of 'Hope and Change' can 'magically turn things around' - but it had no grounding.

Yet the past 12 months you rake in 27% :D:D

So you have a 'GIFT' my friend and but don't let it screw you up and fall for some ridiculous idea you can keep those kind of gains by putting all your money in Gold.

Shift to G - Get a guaranteed 5% Match every 2 weeks plus whatever bogus gain G gives you. You and I go to G for Capital Preservation.

This NEXT DIVE is the Best Thing that could ever happen because the $Trillions that have been waiting - are waiting for 1 of 2 things. 1 and most importantly - that a BULL MARKET solidly takes off now and that is NOT going to happen. 2 - (please play the music) - We need to HIT a SUPER LOW BOTTOM -- oh yeal -- because that is the best possible time to buy.

Buy at the Bottom - and let it ride for years and you will not only far exceed what any 'precious metal' could do - but your TSP will all the more make that much more over the years.

Well goodnight all -- and have a great weekend

Kawzman, please forget these comments.

Too often I talk to people like we've been best friends for ages and have not really taken the time to see how my random spontaneous - unfiltered comments can be 'inappropriate'.

So I'm going to try to monitor myself a bit better.

Anyway -- now that you've made yourself known I hope you stick around.

For once your right, try sticking to the facts and doing your homework before you go off spouting something you have no clue about. Look at the price performance charts and you will see that gold and silver out perform stocks over mutiple points of time going back more than 20 years.

Thank you !!

You're right and I'm eating crow. :embarrest:

What I had in mind was Gold -- in the neighborhood of $800 towards the end of the Bush years. Buying Gold as it was flying up AND a super buy. It went to $1,200 pretty fast.

Your point is well taken and gold and silver have been worth collecting over the years. ;)

My point is a 5% guaranteed match every 2 weeks over many years is something everyone should always strive to take advantage of.

Excellent info and good graft. :)

I feel like I should start a thread, as I've had to repeat this to several of us over the years. Military does not get matching funds, and the money drops into TSP once a month, not every 2 weeks like other folks. TSP makes for a great loan vehicle, but a ROTH has more options under these circumstances.

The information you've shared is highly specific for his concerns and honestly that's the bottom line.

He made himself known and expressed his views and in light of that I'd say you did an outstanding job.

Thank you!!
