Kevorkian was a medical pathologist who challenged social taboos about disease and dying, trying to pass ''right-to-die'' legistlation. He is believed to have assisted in 130 suicides of terminally ill patients since 1990. In 1999, he was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 10 - 25 years in prison but was released after eight years.

The controversial Dr. Jack Kevorkian passed away this morning at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan due to kidney and heart problems
