Kevorkian was a medical pathologist who challenged social taboos about disease and dying, trying to pass ''right-to-die'' legistlation. He is believed to have assisted in 130 suicides of terminally ill patients since 1990. In 1999, he was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 10 - 25 years in prison but was released after eight years.
