My wife has been indecisive about how much to charge for bottles beer in our gallery / cafe.

It is open mostly for lunch with some special evening events. The menu is simple - mostly good sandwiches with sides.

How much for a beer? We have common domestics (bud, coors light, etc.), some imports like Corona and Heineken, and some local good quality micro brews.

I said $2.50 for domestic and $3.50 for imports and micro brews. What say you? Thanks.
 
I don't drink but I would say the customers would enjoy the price as well as the beer. But a quarter or fifty cents more may provide more profit and make both of you happy.

Do you still have that membership issue in Utah? I remember having to pay $5 for a temp every time I wanted a drink in each restaraunt.

What a downer!
 
$4 up to as high $6 is pretty std. for regular issue micros, depending on the market. Special or limited release brews can easily be $8 and more. Obviously it depends on your cost and market but $4 is a damn good price for local micros. I say charge at least $4 and occasionally run $2 or $3 pint specials.

Where I did my master's there was a place that ran a $2 micro special on Tuesday nights...that place a had VERY loyal following!!!! And always cleared out their kegs. They had about 10-15 on tap and would sell at $2 a pop until the kegs ran out free chips & salsa AFTER 10pm...keeps people hanging out. Of course it was mostly a grad student crowd so things still stayed fairly mellow.

Can't speak for macros but based on the above logic it seems $3 would be fair. Again, $2.50 seems more like a "special" price.

No! They got rid of that a year or two ago. Shew! But our license in one that can't serve just beer or wine to a customer. They have to order some kind of food item.

Oh and I should mention that it is a small to medium sized town north of Salt Lake City. Prices are still reasonable. When I go back and visit NY every couple of years it is an eye opening experience to see the prices.

Wow. Sounds a little pricey. Remember, these are bottles. We don't have draft micros yet.

What part of Utah are you in, Mapper?
 
Consider running a buy one get one free special, maybe $6, the more you charge for cheap beer the less they feel they are in a cheap place, if they don't want the second one then it goes back in the cooler for another $6 round for someone else. Less heavyweight beer drinkers per capita in your neck of the woods, two will do. It might be interesting to see if there is a correlation between beer consumption and art sales.

That's sounds like a good idea except I don't think drink specials are legal in Utah (I guess I better take the alcohol class that my wife keeps trying to get me to take.)

It might be interesting to see if there is a correlation between beer consumption and art sales.

We used to offer free wine at our art receptions for that reason (not sure that was perfectly legal, but the mayor never said anything :)) Now that we have a license so we have to sell it. Two birds - one stone. :D

I highly recommend not taking any alcohol classes unless ordered by the court.

I wouldn't know for sure myself...

But i got friends in low places.

I used to be one of the ones checking for the server course cards. Nope, you can't run drink specials when you have the "drinks with food" type of permit. Food specials, but not drink specials. Fair? Not so much.

And I used to check lots of menu prices in parks and surrounding areas for comparability. In Utah the prices you mentioned would have been the norm five years ago. In neighboring states it would have been a bargain.
