The politics around health care today could make anyone ill, but times are even more confounding for investors. Health-care stocks tanked in the lead-up to the U.S. presidential election, before reversing course and rising to become the third-best-performing sector this year, behind technology and consumer-discretionary stocks. Health-care stocks have gained 9% this year, compared to the Standard & Poor’s 500 index’s 7%.
