They can under certain condition, unfortunately this isnt one of them. I will be recieving a relocation bonus, but not full PCS benefits. The good part is that I will have more freedom with the moving monies. The down side is that I will have to deal with the house given the amazing housing market conditions.

Im hoping that the fall-out hasnt hit country markets as much as it has on the left/right coasts. But the lower numbers of home buyers has definitely increased the availability of houses available in local towns which will be stiff competition.

One more point to add. -- If anyone here points someone to buy my place, Ill gladly pay 2% as a finders fee. PM for details.

I went through basic at Knoxs as well. Didn't get to see much of the surrounding area- but I still remember those hills.....(AArrrgghh...).

By platoon sergeant was SFC Clifford Cluff. Ooohhh. I will remember that gentleman for MANY years to come. And we lived in those dank World War II wooden barracks...24 men per floor....

I think it was Heartbreak.

Personally, I didn't mind the running, the marching, or the push ups. However, I couldn't do those damn monkey bars at the entrance to the mess hall. ----Jim

Monkey bars? You guys had monkey bars?

What year?

(I went through Knox in 83 and no monkey bars- we had an old WWII "mess hall" - just our company ate there. I understand now everybody does "consolidated dining facilities" instead.)

I was drafted in 1969.

We had the old WWII barracks, no insulation or inside walls. Just 2X4s, exterior wooden siding, bunk beds, locker boxes, and red butt cans filled with sand. The barracks looked like a scene from the movie Stripes.

Our drill Sergent had served in Vietnam in the 101st Airborne. So, we had a big Screaming Eagle insignia painted on our latrine floor. And, of course, we had ZERO privacy in the latrine.

Each company had a tiny mess hall. We ate in 7 min (or some other small amount of time) shifts. It was no problem for me since I came from a big family. However, a lot of the guys couldn't eat their meals in the allotted time.

The good old days at $100 per month and all the monkey bars you could negotiate. :cheesy: -----Jim

I went through in 83 as well. We had monkey bars, but they were by the PT field, which actually wasn't too far from the mess hall. Did you guys have to crawl underneath the barracks and pull "anything green"? It rained 7 of the 8 weeks I was there for crying out loud.

You all do realize that "Stripes" was filmed there don't ya?

Now that you mention it, yes.

The all volunteer army must be very different than the draftee army. We had everyone from petty criminals (go into the army or go to jail) to people with advanced degrees - all enlisted draftees.

I got drafted just as the American people, and particularly young people, were losing their enthusiasm for the war.

The first thing my platoon did was to build a big peace sign outside the barracks. They used the ubiquitous white painted rocks that lined the side walks. Of course, it only lasted for about 30 seconds after our drill Sergent discovered it.

Did they still have the confidence course tower in 83? The one where you shimmy up 3-4 stories to a platform, grab a board underneath the platform, and flip your body out into space to reach the platform below. Once you got used to it, it was fun.

I had a lot of fun in those eight weeks. Now, it would literally kill me!----Jim

I also did my basic training at Fort Knox in 1969. It was December-January and very cold. I caught a bug and got sick, and later broke out in hives. Ah, those were the days when one screw-up caused pain for all by M14 rifles extended. It’s as rokid described it with old WWII barracks. I was in Company B, 3rd Battalion or something like that. There was no eating allowed, cause it was more like swallowing whole while trying to breath in-between swallows.

I believe they did but we never got to go on it because of all the damn rain. In fact, we had our bivouac after our 15 mile road march and were suppose to be bused back but the trucks couldn't get to us so we had to march all the way back, sometimes through waist high water. Had a drill sergeant make us drop when we got back. He was relieved of duty for that...........:D

I would never compare my basic training experience to being in Nam, but with all the rain, I had a better understanding.

That sounds miserable.:(

I was there in the fall. It was dry and beautiful.

I didn't know that march was 15 miles! I just remember marching up hill in the dark until we stopped and pitched our shelter halves.----Jim

Ah yes, Stripes.

Yes, I remember - our "dining hall" was right next to the PT field- and we were Bravo Company as well, as I remember. I was there between March and May 83. We never had to go under the barracks to pull anything "green", but I do remember having to stand firewatch all night- and yes, the lack of privacy in the latrine.

The biggest "deal" was when we finally were allowed to go to the PX about the fifth week or so. We thought we were in heaven, finally getting to be able to walk away from the barracks on our own!

Memories....
