This Sunday (March 14th) HBO is scheduled to show the first episode of it's 10-part mini-series "The Pacific". From the creators of "Band of Brothers" [Tom Hanks & Steven Spielberg] the Pacific tells the intertwined stories of three real-life Marines during America's battle with the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II. The first episode is about the marines landing on Guadalcanal in order to secure its strategically vital airfield. I believe it is airing at 9PM and again at 11PM Eastern Time. With (reportedly) a price tag of around $200 million, if correct, would almost certainly make it the most expensive TV project of all time.

I cant wait! Hope it is as least as good as Band Of Brothers. I've seen that show start to end MANY times...
 
It really depends. The thing that makes Band of Brothers good is that is follows that single company all the way through the European theatre. That continuity helped build an emotional attachment to what was going on beyond the war and fighting sequences. The challenge the Pacific theatre is going to have is building that same emotional content. But Ill watch it either way. ;)
 
I have watched the first three episodes and they were interesting but, unsettling. After last weeks’ episode I wasn’t as interested in watching more but, today I was seated at a Veterans clinic. The person who sat down beside me introduced himself and asked if I was a Vet, which part of the military etc. During our brief conversation he told me that he had been one of only 1,000 men that took part in one particular piece of the Pacific theater. He mentioned Manila and Corregidor. He also told me about being part of a group that shipped three German Generals back to Germany and how he had eaten the very same food the Generals ate. He spoke about a place (too difficult to remember) in Japan where he was in a base with MacArthur and mentioned he had been asked to rejoin the forces in the Korean War. I just listened because after watching the first few series of this miniseries I didn’t want to stir up memories. After the clinic ended I did recap what he told me - in order to try to remember most of it. I told him I was interested but, didn’t want to enquire further. He said he didn’t mind and then voluntarily told me about his most difficult part – a three day period followed by a fake finish (or something to that effect) which carried over into a fourth day. I doubt his particular events will be documented but, it has made me want to watch tomorrow’s episode.
