Dow sinks 3% Wednesday midday, on pace for worst drop in 2 weeks, as New York tri-state area imposes 2-week quarantine for hotspot visitors

U.S. stock benchmarks on Wednesday midday were seeing losses deepen to potentially the worst decline since a selloff on June 11 as rising coronavirus cases helped to trigger a sharp decline in the broader market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 784 points, or 3%, at last check at 24,400, the S&P 500 index was trading 2.8% lower at 3,044, while the Nasdaq Composite Index was off 2.5% at 9,881. At least part of the downturn has been attributed to new coronavirus cases jumping in several states, with Arizona, Texas and California reporting daily records of infections Tuesday. The rise in infections in other parts of the U.S. prompted the governors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to mandate that visitors to those states coming from hotspots quarantine for at least two weeks. The stock market last saw a sharp drop on June 11.
