Dow clings to 1% gain after giving up 1,100-point opening gain in volatile Friday trade

U.S. stocks midday Friday were losing ground after staging a powerful opening burst higher, with investors finding it difficult to buy assets perceived as risky like stocks following one of the worst declines since Oct. 19, 1987. Equity benchmarks tried to punch higher after a report from NBC News indicated that President Donald Trump would be discussing using emergency measures to release funds to help combat the outbreak of COVID-19, the infectious disease that was first identified in Wuhan, China in December and has infected more than 128,000 people, spreading to more than 100 countries across the globe. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 234 points, or 1.1%, at 21,432, but had been as high as 22,540, while the S&P 500 index held a 1.2% gain to reach at 2,510 but had seen an intraday peak at 2,632.44, while the Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 0.9% to reach 7,264, but had been as high as 7,651.35.
