Donald Trump delays tariff increase on request from China
US president Donald Trump has postponed the introduction of higher tariffs on Chinese goods until October 15, in a rare “goodwill” gesture as the two economic powers gear up for another round of high-stakes trade negotiations. Mr Trump on Wednesday evening tweeted that an increase in tariffs on $250bn worth of Chinese goods scheduled for October 1 would be pushed back for two weeks as the original date coincided with the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. In what he said was a response to a request from Liu He, the top Chinese trade official, Mr Trump “agreed as gesture of goodwill” to temporarily postpone a planned increase in tariffs — a rise from 25 to 30 per cent — for two weeks.
