Direct Access Broker?

I currently have a Firstrade account and I was reading online that direct access brokers execute your trades faster. I don't know much about them and was hoping you guys would be able to let me know if they are worth my time or not.

Unless you are a big money guy like board member Nnuut speed really doesn't matter. The cost of transactions is probably more important.
