Crochet?

Just wanted to report back and tell everyone who sent ideas how much I appreciate you. The internet is wonderful!

After getting your tips about where to start, one search led to another and another. And now I know about a company called Herrchners that sells a CD with visual knitting and crochet instructions. And I've found some very simple patterns for beginner shawls. And I love the idea behind them.

They're called prayer shawl patterns. Because they are so simple with repeating patterns that you can work on them while you're thinking of, praying about, meditating on blessings you have and things you might need. And if you don't need the finished product then you can donate it to a local hospital or charity.

Sometimes the world still is a beautiful place. :)

Nasa, thank you so much! I hadn't thought about asking at places that sold yarn and stuff. Great idea. And I'm going to start doing a Youtube keyword search right now. Thank you, thank you!

Lady,

My wife crochet's and she said that YouTube has sessions on crocheting. She will get some more information for me and I will post it for you. She also asked if there was a JoAnn Frabric near you. They offer classes. You could check with your local library, maybe there is a club that usees their meeting rooms.

Yep!..Use to do it when I was younger..

in all seriousness: have you considered beading? they sell tiny looms and the craft shops/fairs can be fun to browse. interesting stories and history if you can manage to get tutored by a grandmother.

smaller, potentially more frustrating, but overwhelming benefits to the spirit.

No, burro, I hadn'st even thought of beading. I've watched some of the grandmothers do brick bead and it looks complicated but their results are awesome. I've purchased some of the results. Thanks for the suggestion.

Lady, best way is to find someone who knits and ask them to spend a few hours with you to teach the basics. ....

Crochet-hah! never did get beyond row #2 with them. Beading could get expensive in a hurry, depending how much you want to spend for beads. I've seen some that would cost $100 for just one.

I'd start with knitting or crocheting something small-scarf would do it.

Allie, thanks for your advice. It's always appreciated! We have a community center about 10 minutes from the house and I'll ask there. Maybe they can point me in the right direction.

And I already know you're right about beads being expensive. I have some semi-precious beads used for making earrings (turquoise, of course, and amethysts, garnets, etc.). They sure look nice but they're pricey.

I was never able to master the double-pointed or circular needles growing up, but my boss spent a few hours with me last fall one day and got me going on them finally. there's only about 4 basic knitting stitches, everything else is just combinations of them-doesn't matter whether using 2 needles, 4 needles or circular needles.

Okay, this is really a Hail Mary pass. And I realize I'm going to open myself up to ribbing here for even asking. :cheesy: But does anyone on the MB crochet or knit?

I was advised today to start doing crochet, knitting or something similar to keep fingers talking to the command center. And I haven't done anything like that since I was twelve. No classes around here that I've found yet. So I'm looking for good resources on the internet and am hoping to get some recommendations.
