Hi all.
I hope I'm not breaking any rule. I'm not a government employee, but my wife is.
It wasn't until a few months ago that I even paid any attention to our TSP account. I assumed that she knew what was going on with it and was doing what was best. I started asking her questions about it and realized that she was really taking no interest in it, other than the amount of the contributions into it.
So I decide I'm going to keep track of it and try to make decisions on the allocations. I start the tedious process of trying to get all the info and tools I need to do that.......than I came across this site.

EVERYTHING I NEED IS HERE!!!
Explanations of the funds, past performances, that cool auto-tracker tool,etc.etc.

I just found the site yesterday but am really looking forward to exploring the site and learning what I can.

Welcome... TSPTalk is all about managing and growing the account. The fact that you are involved qualifies you to be here :) Welcome aboard!

Thank you everyone.
Let me start with a 1st general easy question.
Whats maximum number of transfers?
My wife told me stories of people who made multiple trades a day and because of that, TSP changed its policy.

2 per month, with a protection option move to G.

i.e.

100% "C" - IFT #1 to "S", 100% "S" - IFT #2 to "I"

Now, that's two IFTs in one calendar month.....

Now you can start by pulling bits, pieces or all into the "G" for protection...

From their booklet:

An IFT is a transaction that allows you to redistribute all or part of your existing TSP account among the different TSP funds. For each calendar month, your first two IFTs can redistribute money in your account among any or all of the TSP funds. After that, for the remainder of the month, your IFTs can only move money into the Government Securities Investment (G) Fund (in which case, you will increase the percentage of your account held in the G Fund by reducing the percentage held in one or more of the other TSP funds).
An IFT has no effect on new money coming into your account. (If you have both a civilian and a uniformed services account, this applies to each account separately.)

No that was one trade every day now we're limited to two a month. Read around to get the details. One a day trading, like the pill, not day trading.

Welcome to the board.:D

YEPPERS!

We're to blame!

You still like us???

Remember this... "they" (along with the US gov) do not like for common folk like us to become echumacated because we then become a threat to their internal policies and buddy system.;)

Welcome:D

Hey it doesn't bother me. Use the system for all its worth (while it lasts-lasted). Too much pressure for me though. I'm still freak'n out over the last two days. See, if I'd had found this site a couple of days earlier I might have saved myself some grief.

Welcome, LT! Yeah, me and probably most of everyone else on this board, especially the autotrackers, got the 'special' letter from the TSP board about 'cease and desist' just before they changed the rule to 2 a month (with unlimited retreats to G after the first 2). But if you want some more interesting reading, go to the '<1% IFTs' thread by Squalebear! At least it keeps you in the game after you've used your 2!
Good Luck!

liltommy, welcome aboard. Remember if you decide to use an IFT it has to be completed before noon EST.

Thanks.
I was going to do a little reading before I started asking too many questions, but the "timing" of the transfers was something else I need to find out about.
12:00. Got it.

This seems to be confusing to some new folks so I will take it a little further with an example:

If an IFT is made before 12:00 noon ET on 2/24 (thurs), you sell your old shares, and buy your new shares at the close of business price of 2/24 (thurs), so you are in the new funds the following business day, 2/25 (friday).

If you wait until 12:01 PM ET on 2/24 (thurs), everything gets pushed foward one business day. You would be selling your old shares, and buying your new shares at the close of business price on 2/25 (friday), and that puts you in the new funds the following business day 2/28 (monday).

And that is one of the things about TSP that sux

Thankyouverymuch...
That saved me some reading.
I understand it, and it made me realize the IFT I did earlier was probably a mistake.
Sa li vi. I've 10 years or so to make it better.
Oh! I've 1 more before the end of the month.

16:00 deadline would be the ticket, but heck no that would make it easier to make money. Why can't they have a Swing Shift?
