Zero commissions and people hanging out not working has had a huge hand in the volume. If it's retail trading driving the price, then why are investment houses constantly upgrading the tech stocks?
Interview has some great points. Retail traders are using options much more than in the past, but they also have much more sophisticated tools than ever before. Citadel also believes retail is just one component and that they do not have the ability to drive price.

Citadel Securities, the market-maker that counts Ken Griffin as its largest owner, said retail traders now account for about a fifth of stock-market trading and as much as a quarter on the most active days.
