Dispute over Census questions ends in Calif. woman's death


A U.S. Census Bureau worker in California was threatened Thursday night by a man with a firearm, and the man's wife was later shot and killed by police officers.

Officials in South Yuba City, Calif., said that a census taker was confronted by a man who pointed a firearm at the worker and said he would not answer questions. The census worker drove home and reported the incident to her supervisor, according to the Census Bureau. The supervisor called police, who then responded to the residence.

When police arrived, the man answered the door armed with a handgun. His wife also approached with a shotgun, pointed it at the officers in a threatening manner and was later shot and killed when she refused to drop the weapon. The officers are on administrative leave pending an internal investigation, according to local news reports.

Resident threatened census worker, police say

SPRINGFIELD TWP., Ohio – The lawyer for a man accused of threatening a U.S. Census worker with a BB gun said his client “didn’t want to be bothered.”

Those comments came after an arraignment for Hakeem Bilal, a disabled Vietnam veteran whom Springfield Township police arrested on charges of aggravated menacing and drug possession after the Monday threat.
Police said Bilal, 60, threatened Census worker Keith Miller when Miller knocked at the door of his home in the 2200 block of Magdalena Drive.

Officers responding to Miller’s call found a small amount of marijuana inside the home, according to court records.
His lawyer, Dan Might, told Hamilton County Municipal Judge Russell Mock the incident was simply an “argument” and pointed out his client has no history of violence.

Mock set bail at $5,000 but said Bilal could be released on home arrest in lieu of that bond.

Report: More than 113 Census workers threatened and attacked this month.

Last week, a routine visit by a U.S. Census worker in Yuba City, California ended in violence when “police officers shot and killed a woman they said had first threatened the worker with a gun, then later confronted officers with a shotgun.” The Washington Post’s Ed O’Keefe reports today that the threat against a Census worker was not an isolated incident. In fact, the Census Bureau says that “more than 113 census takers have been the victims of assaults or attacks this month”:

In response to inquiries by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), Census Director Robert Groves said the bureau’s temporary workers knocking on doors to collect information have faced 29 threats involving a gun, four robberies and three instances of being held against their will or carjacked. Seven workers died in car accidents and one was killed while off duty.

The Census Bureau hired about 635,000 people to follow up with people who did not return questionnaires by the end of April. The process is more than half completed, and is scheduled to continue into July.

Bureau officials said the overall pattern and types of incidents are similar to the 2000 census, but cautioned this year’s figures are already much higher than ten years ago and include a mix of news accounts and formal reports to the bureau’s safety office.

As ThinkProgress has noted, for months, conservatives have spread unfounded fears and rumors about the Census, and some have even endorsed intimidating Census workers. In April, CNN contributor and RedState editor Erick Erickson threatened on his radio show to “pull out my wife’s shotgun” if a Census worker approached his home for the American Community Survey.

One came to my house today asking about my neighbor across the street. Seems a woman Census taker tried to take his information and he told her to get off of his property! He asked me the neighbor's name and I only know his first name :laugh:. I asked him why he didn't know his name, he said he just had a address and that is all they give them. My neighbor is a Grinch!

I never knew the accuracy of the count was so important. Seems that proportionality is lost. Wish there was the same emphasis in overseeing expenditures. But in DC more energy is expended on powerpoint fonts than in minimizing contractor hours.
