(CNN) -- A Boeing 777 operated by Asiana Airlines crashed while landing Saturday at San Francisco International Airport, an FAA spokesman told CNN.

Video from the scene posted on YouTube showed dark gray smoke rising from the plane, which appeared to be upright.
Evacuation slides could be seen extending from one side of the aircraft, from which there was no apparent smoke.
The airport is located about 12 miles south of downtown San Francisco.

Asiana Airlines is one of South Korea's two major airlines, the other being Korean Air.

Certainly looks like pilot error at this point. I feel bad for everyone involved, and I'm glad more people weren't killed. This is about to be all about lawyers.

This seems to be a good description of what happened.

Asiana 214 - Wired Description

Note: Both the ILS (Instrument Landing System radio vertical glideslope guidance) and the PAPI (Pilot visual glideslope light set) were out of service at SFO Runway 28L, an over-water approach. Over-water approaches can be more difficult to judge height than over land, due to the lack of visual references on the ground.

A NOTAM(Notice to Airmen) for the ILS (radio) being out of service was issued in June.
The NOTAM for the PAPI (visual) being out of service was not issued until after the accident.

The pilot would have no way of knowing in advance of the approach that the
PAPI visual light vertical guidance system was not working.

At 500 feet and just 34 seconds before impact, the airspeed slowed to 134 knots
Not enough wind over the wings!:suspicious:
