Bill calls for two weeks of federal furlough

Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO) introduced a bill this week that would require two weeks of furlough in 2011 for federal civilian employees. The furloughs would save taxpayers $5.5 billion, according to a release about the bill.

well, that is certainly a political move before elections. should get him lots of conservative taxpayer votes-you may not realize, the govt shut down for a couple weeks about 15 years ago for other budgetary reasons-it created chaos.

I'd venture to say here at Cherry Point NC ,FRC East, a mandated furlow of 50% GS13 and above and 50% of engineering and 50% of office people redundants; 50% contractors,... a 2wk furlough would show tremendous record setting budget busting profits, BUT, However, when they returned vengance would be theirs and they would definitely get that money back with a vengance and double %%%!

Ah flashbacks to the Reagan years too.....

IIRC, all who were furloughed for the day or so, got back pay for the time off...

Actually there was some inter-agency jealousy-it was an agency by agency decision on payback. I know people in at least one agency who didn't get paid back.

State of Kalefornea employees were furloughed two days a month (24 days) last year. They were not - and will not be - paid for those days. Effectively, their salaries were cut 12%.

That can, will, and should happen to us Feds...


It won't be a Republican thing or a Democrat thing. It will be a thing demanded by the populace. That is, the voters. We now get paid enough that our jobs are no longer safe.

Sure there is. Uncle Sam will just pass some more IOU's to the Chinese, and we'll spend what we make on Saudi oil.

The bill will never make it out of committee. It's a ploy for votes, nothing else.

Not saying it couldn't happen. It did before. One reason I keep a decent cash balance in checking account-Feds also need that emergency reserve for the what-ifs. Kali isn't the only state whose employees are getting Friday furloughs this year. My state's doing the same.

but the furloughs back in 95 impacted millions of non-feds, not just feds. think about it. contractors not getting paid if somebodys not doing the inspections, approving the payments, processing the payments, etc., your parents not getting their SS or fed retirement checks, etc. You didn't get the paycheck so couldn't make your rent payment cause you're a GS-7 and don't have spare cash in the bank, living from paycheck to paycheck. so the landlord ran short on making his payment to the bank. etc.

This one I agree with Jim about..merely a political scare tactic....Besides, 2/3's of the Government work force is Republican..think about it.

I remember the furlough in 95, only keep personnel were required to show and for two weeks I showed and worked, while my fellow team mates were off, all of us with no pay. Boom......budget passed and those who were sent home got all the back pay, plus their time off was charged as administrative leave. So they got additional two weeks leave..........our government can make poor decisions, eh? :cheesy:

Heh, someone either has amnesia or wasn't around for the last time this happend. There are a lot of Feds who are considered "essential", for instance do you really want the Secret Service gone for two weeks? Meat Inspectors? No Social Security Checks? All National Parks Closed?

Groundhog Day! Remember the Clinton Shutdown: Essential workers work for free for two weeks. Everyone else stays home. No list of essential workers so guess what, they pay everyone. Essential workers get punked (see Zebra below).

The rest of us got nervous hoping we get paid in time to make mortgage/rental payment.

Oh, and then came the big snowstorm where they had to close DC for another two days. And we got paid for that too.
