ballnoutacontrol account talk

Hey everybody, new to the site, been in the TSP since 03. Have taken a big interest in the marktets over the last 6 months after finally jumping into the I/S/C in late may after a long wait in the G. Made some money and feeling pretty good about everything. As of right now I am in the G just waitin to see what the market will do. So here I am, anyone with advice send it.

Thanks, balln

Hey Guys, I am going to be deploying to a "taxfree" zone next year. So I am wondering if it would be of any benefit to wait on making my contributions until I am in the tax free zone. I am thinking it would be because that money or the gains shouldn't ever be taxed. What do you thinik?:confused:

Welcome! Good luck with your account.

Tax-free - good! But I don't know enough about that situation to give advice. Perhaps some fellow military personnel can help.

Holy cow, this downturn has a pretty bad feel to it. I have been waiting for the eventual market drop since the 14th of Aug when I went to G. I did go in 50/50 S and C for a couple of days at the end of the month that netted me a couple $100, but that's it. Sitting in G right now(and glad to be threre) So now I am waiting to see how far she will go down. I looks like it will continue, seems like the drop happened really quickly so maybe there is alot of momentum behind it. Although who knows market has had some good underlying strength so who knows.

Maybe there will be the rally till the end of the week like what happend a two weeks ago and we will break even ur a bit up this week.

I have had a feeling that the bulls are the ones who have bought into the market and have held the majority of the shares and they have been holding strong. I have felt for a bit that all they would need is something to start them selling and then maybe there would be avalanche of selling because they have made some good profits and would be willing to sell.

Good Commentary and Good Luck ballnoutacontrol.

Oh and Welcome. :)

I have never heard of anyone in the military getting any matching contributions. I have heard of the program for certian rates, but just don't know anyone who has gotten it.

I guess think about it like this:
If you had the opportunity to put money into your account tax free and it wouldn't be taxed when you withdraw would you do it or stick with the norm? At least I think that the way it will work. Thanks for you thoughts

Just talked to my friend and he says that only the contributions won't be taxed. The returns on the investment will be. If so that sucks, but it makes sense. Gotta get taxed sometime. If that was the case it would be pretty lucrative to stay in the tax free zone and build up the old tsp account.

I'm sorry, I didn't know the military didn't kick in a percentage.

Anyway you do have a pretty good Deal there. :D

Unfortunetly the tax free zones are not the friendliest places on earth but if you gotta be there might as well take advantage.

Take care, be safe and GOD speed.

Well, I am now officially in 50/50 C and S. hadn't planned on getting quite yet. I think this slide will continue for another 1-2%, but I had a pending transfer that I forgot to cancel and now it has taken effect. Maybe a good thing if the market rebounds and rallies the same as it did last time it took a dip, but bad if it does what I think it will. I am up 10-14% for the yr so not worrying too much, but crap I wanted to stay out and watch for a bit.

I have been mostly in the G since starting contributing in 03 and my goal has just been not to make less than I would have if I had never left the good ol G. So I am fine with it, we shall see. Crap again......

Well, just saw the IFT request in my e-mail. I put the request in this morning and it took effect at COB today. That is the quickest I have ever seen an IFT take effect.

Looks like the C has took a 3% hit in the last two days and the S took a 3.5% hit. Just hope it comes back instead of more of the same. good luck to all. Ball'n

QUESTION:

I have a Roth IRA in addition to my TSP. How much can I contribute to each with out going over? Any info will be helpful,

Thanks everyone, ball'n

That's pretty standard. Get the IFT done by 12 noon ET and the transaction gets processed at the close of business. After the 12 noon deadline, and it takes another business day.

Well, lost a bit today but hanging in there. I am hoping it turns around soon, before the end of the week at least. Don't quite know how long I will stay in. I know this monthis suppposed to be a down to flat month so not expect too much, but hey the market has had pretty good staying power so who knows. Just gonna wait and see.

IFT today 50/50 F and G for the rest of the month. Looks like the market will close up so my little accidental IFT seems to have netted me a profit so no hard feeling about it.

I was suprised to see the market go up so much today on account of the negative unemployment numbers that were released. Wierd??? I can't help but think that the month will end down.

Will be watching till I get more IFT's next month.

Investors were concentrating on the -216,000 number and the current trajectory with the possibility of a positive report by the end of the year.

BallnOutaControl,

You got to be in the market (at least partially) on the days and weeks that it makes its big moves to generate any earnings. Little 1% and 2% (even 3%) moves shouldn't shake you out of the market. If you miss the big bang ups than you will find the market an exciting but boring place. Your investments will be flat.

But, September and October are generally lousy months to have a large stock allocation. Conversely, that means it’s a great time to contribute into stocks.

By the way, your idea of putting your tax-free income into a Roth is brilliant. Not taxed going in, not taxed coming out - you got one over on the Grasping Hand. Power to you. That income source could come in very handing if the Grasping Hand reaches for a 70% income tax during your retirement bliss ;)

Also, as an individual who has a retirement plan the Roth is the only other qualified plan in which you are permitted to invest. You cannot put additional income into a Traditional IRA. Your only limitation is the annual limit. It will not count against your 401(k) [TSP] max. :)
