AT&T to launch new direct-to-consumer streaming service

AT&T Inc. will be launching a new direct-to-consumer streaming service in the fourth quarter of 2019, WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey announced Wednesday. "This is another benefit of the AT&T/Time Warner merger," he said in a statement, adding: "We expect to create such a compelling product that it will help distributors increase consumer penetration of their current packages and help us successfully reach more customers." In June, AT&T acquired WarnerMedia, formerly known as Time Warner, in a deal that brought Warner Bros., HBO and Turner under the AT&T umbrella. The Department of Justice sued to block the acquisition deal last year, saying it would suppress competition, but a federal judge in June ruled in AT&T's favor. However, the Justice Department has since appealed the decision. AT&T shares have ticked up 0.3% so far this year, while the S&P 500 has gained 6.3%.
