A Defensive Signal from Some Top TSP Talk Investors

Over the final two trading days this week, a noticeable defensive shift occurred among some TSP Talk AutoTracker members. Of the 17 non-premium members who submitted Interfund Transfers (IFTs) during that span, there was a collective increase of 47.9 percentage points in their average G-fund allocation. This shift came at the expense of all three TSP stock funds, with the C-fund (S&P 500 equivalent) seeing the sharpest drop—an average decrease of 28.4 percentage points.

Seventeen moves might not seem like a lot. But the significance lies in who made them.

Among these 17 IFTs, 7 were from members ranked in the Top 50 of the AutoTracker for 2025—those currently posting the highest year-to-date returns. These top performers made an even more pronounced move to safety, collectively increasing their G-fund allocation by 86.4 percentage points. Notably, five of the seven went all-in to the G-fund (100%). The bulk of that shift came from reductions to C-fund holdings, which fell by an average of 54.3 percentage points.

These seven may have shifted sharply to the sidelines, but the broader Top 50 group remains mostly invested in stocks. Here's how the full Top 50 are positioned heading into next week:

The Average Allocation of the Top 50 Members:

G
: 30.8%, F: 0.5%, C: 20.3%, S: 31.0%, I: 17.4%

That means 68.7% of the Top 50's allocations are still in stock funds. But the recent caution shown by some of the best performers is noteworthy—especially from a group that’s up an average of 10.1% in 2025 (as of Thursday’s COB). Stocks prices have been on a climb in May, but we've seen how quickly market sentiment can change.
